If you’re at Lander Street Vintage, it’s just a 10-minute drive to the world-renowned Museum of Flight, home to aircraft of rare vintage. On view through August is “Runway to Runway”, a couture-splashed collection of airline fashion from the golden age of flying. Back when cocktails, caviar and cigarettes set a high bar in the upper-deck lounge, flight attendants walked the aisle in uniforms by international couturiers including Valentino, Pucci and Edith Head. As uniforms evolved, they reflected the changing norms of the 1960’s and the Vietnam era. Summer reading: Benjamin Franklin was known as a sharp wit and astute social observer. “Fart Proudly” is the colloquial title of a lesser-known satirical essay he penned around 1781 (also known as “A Letter to a Royal Academy”) while serving as US Ambassador to France.

This fabulous aviation club chair combines a luxurious Natuzzi leather armchair nested inside a riveted, wraparound metal shell. The result is a deeply comfortable armchair with the presence of a work of art. The metal/wood shell and high-quality Natuzzi seat are sold together, but you can also substitute your own chair - simply slip it into the shell, no tools needed.

We were all over this soaring sculpture by Claudia Fitch, and can hardly believe we now own it! “Hanging Fruit” arrived yesterday at our booth in the west wing of Lander St. Vintage. Approximately 12’ in length, it transforms a space, and can be installed at virtually any angle to fit your room height. We love its cool, modernist vibe and sensual, swaying form. From the 3’-long abstract fruit, a long, flowing stem culminates in a wall-mounted oval baseplate.

The sculpture’s arm and base are made of welded steel; the hanging “fruit“ is crafted of fiberglass. The artwork’s entire surface has sueded texture. Made by Washington-based artist Claudia Fitch in 1993 (she of the "Colossal Heads", an outdoor public art installation of 13ft., stylized heads at Lumen Field). Overall size 58 x 156 x 48”.

Hey there, valentine! If you’re seeking a unique date, we recommend “The Exquisite Creatures Exhibit,” artist and naturalist Christopher Marley’s stunning meditation on the relationship between art, science and nature.🪲Through collages and assemblages made up of sustainably collected flora and fauna, much of it donated to the artist by museums, institutions or individuals who would otherwise dispose of it, Marley reveals the almost explosive diversity of nature. Drawing on influences spanning from the medieval cabinet of curiosities to ancient jewelry to his background in graphic design, Marley has created a world where once living creatures are preserved with a rare aesthetic and evident reverence.

A short film in the exhibition explains how Marley went from being a globetrotting, insect-phobic creative in the fashion industry to a dedicated preservationist. In the thoughtful text accompanying the show, he refers to the writings of naturalist E.O. Wilson, whose concept of biophilia explains how our deep affinity for nature - including its tiniest beings - springs from a hard-wired sense of our own embedded (albeit paved over-) place in the natural order.

Years ago, I worked odd jobs for an antiques dealer in Seattle; it included repairing the broken limbs of large insect specimens damaged in shipping. The articulated leg joint of a 10” grasshopper would be reattached with a Japanese glue with a needle-thin applicator; a torn butterfly wing was restored with a bit of tissue adhered to the underside. Working with insects is not fast work - which makes Marley’s pieces, some of which involve placing hundreds of insects in very precise geometric patterns, all the more astonishing. I didn’t spot a single fallen leg segment, or glimmer of dust shaken from a moth’s wing, in the entire show.

“Exquisite Creatures” is a ravishing spectacle of beauty, but also of profound loss. Marley’s work is a reminder that an estimated 150 species go extinct each day. See it while you can. -LK

Patti Smith performed “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” at the Nobel Prize ceremonies for someone who actually did win the prize - Bob Dylan.

Dylan’s poetry witnesses every pain experienced in the human experience, cutting through the self-aware political power of this particular audience. Patti Smith, who falters in the middle of the song, somehow further cements Dylan’s place in musical history.
