I started mixing my own music because being the studio in a new country learning the nuances of a culture I only knew from the outside was intimidating. It was also costly.

One of my friends put me on to Pro Tools, the mbox and I bought a Blue Bird microphone. That would start the process of me learning how to make my voice work together with sounds and eventually how to make sounds work together.

Since then, I got certified, mixed a couple thousand records and got to work with artists who remind why I love this so much. All while feeding my songwriter brain because writing with a sound in mind and the execution of that sound through engineering are now almost inextricable. It also helped contextualize my producer brain & it’s still the main way I regulate to this day.

I’m back recording and mixing with a select few artists at @asparagus_media_studio and it already feels like home.

Dissociation means I experience most things in isolation and isolated corners of my mind while it puts itself on autopilot. From grief, to joy, to need from the perspective of a brain that is not optimized for this version of society and socializing. I needed yesterday for a number of reasons and I almost didn’t do it. You know, I always fondly (yet quietly) looked forward to sharing stories with my older cousin (and my family) the same way he would share so many of his with us when we were kids/teens. Make it make sense why I’ve been away so long dealing with things at the intersection of my complicated mental health and my pursuits. I’m grateful for the audience, the team, every artist/friend who blessed me/us with their talent, the living we cherish and the folk we won’t forget as long as memory serves us. More later. My heart is heavy and a part of me honestly doesn’t know how collected I’ll be by Saturday, but I’ll make it something that also honors my brother who’s life I wish I had been more present in. A hard way to re-learn this lesson.

Love Yourz At Soirée just took on a bigger meaning from me. I will use it as a reminder that no matter what all I’m chasing, I need to go home and be with mine often, call more often, say “hello” more often, even when I feel like there’s not enough to share yet. Because no one is forever and the smiles from my loved ones I can see today I must cherish because vala morgulis. I’ll see you on all on Saturday. Grateful for the good folks at @_good_daze_ and for my family that reminds they still love me from a distance despite my absence.
