“DEATH” is both a visual album and a time capsule of my past life in Oakland—before I knew the death of my mom was on the horizon; the death of my relationship; and the death of my life in Oakland. I named this album with a strange confidence before I really even knew what death was. “DEATH” has been an extremely long project in the making, with a stretch of time between finished and published. I started writing these songs in 2018 while deep in a life of love, parties, and introspection. The music videos were made between 2021-2023, right before the volcanic ending of my long-term relationship which was then followed by my mother’s cancer diagnosis. Both things flipped my world around and marked the end of my life in Oakland before I could even make sense of my breakup.

When death feels so real, when grief feels so huge, it makes art feel meaningless. I had one year with my mom after her cancer diagnosis where art had no purpose, publishing had no purpose. Death forces you to focus on life in front of you. My mom passed away in October 2024 and I’m so far away from who I was when I started writing these songs, started imagining these music videos, the years it took to film all five of them. I’ve died and I have become a new person since this project started and I’m happy to know that I’m alive to reflect back on it now.

I spent 10 years in Oakland growing into an adult and becoming a part of a lifelong family. The many loves of my life are involved and showcased in these videos. I’m vulnerable and honest with my lyrics and my body. Some things take a long time, and that is true for understanding death and the changes we must go through to accept it; both the earth-shattering and the small.
