in the making ~ FINTIFLUSCHKIN

Where does the joy come from in imagining something and making it a reality?
Fintifluschkin is the name of a new character. My friend Kostja, who grew up in Dnipropetrovsk, told me a long time ago that the Russian term refers to someone who finds things. His mother, Emilia, recently clarified that it actually refers to something small and insignificant, like knick-knacks or bits and bobs.
Here you can see Fintifluschkin as a soft toy – it’s half-finished as it’s still missing large wings with lots of pockets filled with special little objects. I’ll be presenting this soft sculpture at the launch of the next issue of Spring Anthology @springmagazin in Hamburg, as part of the comic festival @comicfestivalhamburg at Galerie Frappant @frappantgalerie in early October 2026.

woher kommt das glück, sich etwas auszudenken und es wirklichkeit werden zu lassen?
fintifluschkin ist der name eines neuen characters. mein freund kostja, der in Dnjepropetrovsk aufgewachsen ist, hat mir vor langem erzählt, der begriff stehe im russischen für jemand, der etwas findent. seine mutter emilia stellte kürzlich klar, dass es eher für etwas kleines unbedeutendes steht - wie schnick-schnack oder krims-krams by @mioke.de

After seven years I’ve started working on a new graphic novel. MY NAME IS RUBEUS
My last graphic novel “SUMPFLAND”, was only made possible because I received a grant at the AIR in Krems Austria. Now I’m going to apply for new grants so that I can continue working on this book. The structure is once again a complex web of short stories that are interconnected.

I’m delighted that the main character has found her way to me: FINTIFLUSCHKIN. She’s a multi-layered character who can hardly be pigeonholed into categories like good and evil. In the story You’ll find familiar faces, such as Popov & ZKE, the mandrakes or the shape-shifters, but also completely new characters I’ve encountered recently. For example, a swift called SEGLA, who doesn’t realise that she is actually a bird.

I would like to thank those who have supported my artistic development in comic storytelling over the years. Starting with the Spring collective @springmagazin and Sascha Hommer @sashommer & Arne Bellsdorf @arnebellstorf in the early 2000s. Then Reprodukt @reprodukt_berlin and Dirk Rehm for publishing my first graphic novel, *WANDERING GHOST*. Karoline Bofinger @karolinebofinger , Pictoplasma @pictoplasma and all the anthologies that invited me to publish stories: Kush @kushkomikss , Rotopol @rotopol , Polle @volle.polle , Peridot @publishedbyperidot ! Thank you! To my family, especially Colo, Thomas, Marco, Pepe & Ada, for practical help, inspiration and encouragement! It is never the individual artist – it is always a fertile social environment that enables one to dream and realise one’s ideas!
