EVENTO:

NOCTURNAL ECLIPSE
Other Forms of Return

There are exhibitions that ask for attention, and others that ask for stillness. The recent works of @miquelponce belong firmly to the latter.

At first glance, the paintings appear deceptively simple. Reduced palettes, restrained compositions, and quiet geometries create an immediate sense of calm. Yet the longer one spends with them, the more their complexity reveals itself.

What interested me most was the way the works seem to operate as windows, not onto a specific landscape, but onto a state of mind. Inspired by the sea and natural environments, Ponce strips away distraction and movement, leaving behind spaces that encourage pause and contemplation. In a world increasingly defined by speed, these paintings propose a different rhythm.

Layers of canvas are inserted within one another like fragments of memory. Margins, cracks, sanded surfaces, traces of previous gestures, and subtle imperfections remain visible, creating a delicate balance between construction and erosion. The result feels almost archaeological, as if each work contains the record of its own making.

The history of painting is present throughout. The idea of the painting as a window is revisited, but not through representation. Instead, the work reflects on painting itself: its limits, its processes, and its capacity to create meaning through material, colour, texture, and time.

Standing before these works, I was reminded that silence can be as powerful as gesture. Their strength lies not in what they declare, but in the space they create for reflection.
