People disappear all the time.

Six years ago, I disappeared into the world of Outlander and was forever changed. And now that the show just ended its 12-year run, I self-soothe with the reassurance of Jamie’s words to Claire in season 4, that “nothing is lost, only changed.“

8 seasons, 9 books (plus short stories & Outlandish Companions), 3 rewatches, 2 events, many drams of Scotch, and countless tears later.

I know it’s “just” a fandom. It’s “just” fiction. But fiction can be some of the most powerful education there is. Outlander and its characters taught me what it means to love, and how a person deserves to be loved. It taught me about growth. About courage. About the importance of found family, as well as family by blood. It also taught me more Scottish and American history than my education ever did…

Thank you, @outlander_starz, for the temporary escape. Now I’m ready to return to my time, ready to love fiercely with a bit more courage, and a bit more Gaelic.

Whether it’s a random encounter on the Upper East Side or that quiet voice in your head telling you it’s time to learn something new—those moments aren’t accidents.

Sometimes we shy away from the parts of our culture or history that feel “too complex” or “not for us,” but there is so much power in leaning into learning.

Whether it’s halakha, a new skill, or a forgotten piece of your identity, it’s never too late to start (shoutout to Rabbi Akiva starting at 40!).

Life is just one long masterclass, and your soul is a straight-A student. 🕊️
