The Smell of Roasted Coffee
Does it ever happen to you that a smell brings everything back? Not just a memory, but a whole chapter of your life.
For me, it’s the smell of freshly roasted coffee.
It takes me back to the early nineties. Hard, uncertain years when money could lose its value before you even reached the shop.
We didn’t buy coffee the way we do now. We bought it raw, and our mothers roasted it at home. Then, it was our turn, the children.
In every house, there was a small manual coffee mill, and a heavy, endless task that came with it.
Whenever they handed it to me, I would think, not again.
I wanted to go outside. I wanted to play. Grinding coffee felt like the most boring thing in the whole world.
Still, I did it.
And even though I would never admit it back then, it made me feel important. Like I was part of something serious, even if I didn’t fully understand it yet.
That smell, warm, bitter, full, carries both things for me.
It carries the weight of those years and the quiet strength of women who refused to give up.
Our mothers didn’t have much, but they always found a way. They roasted, improvised, and stretched what little we had. And somehow, there was always coffee (and food) on the table.
Today, when I smell freshly roasted beans, I remember small hands turning a heavy handle. And I remember how important it was to stay close.
Women like Mira did way more than roast coffee. They made uncertain times feel steadier.
Maybe that’s why coffee still feels like more than a drink.
Maybe it’s not just the smell.
Maybe it’s the memory of sticking together, and the quiet reminder that even in difficult times, we can carry more than we think. by @miracoffee_pt

Mira Coffee is more than a drink—it’s a feeling. A moment of comfort that brings you home, just like the Oriole bird, migrating far yet always returning to familiar places. Crafted from the finest beans and roasted with care, every sip blends quality with nostalgia. Welcome home..
