rev·e·la·tionIt’s been two years since i’ve painted in my style. I held an art show during covid, and while the sales were great, and all my friends came out to celebrate my newest work at the time, i didn’t enjoy the process: The pressure of painting to sell. Because that’s what “real” artists do, right? They sell their work?I felt dejected after that show even though i’d made a personal record in sales that night and if you’ve been following me you probably noticed i haven’t been doodling. I’ve dabbled in some acrylic since, some gouache, but not my signature abstract watercolor and ink work with all my dots and lines and meditation that goes with it.I’ve had the urge to paint before and i’d set up my table with my paints and pens, an then i’d literally think: whats the point? Put everything away and i’d get in bed and zone out to a movie.I’m a high acheiver. I’m hyper analytical. I’m a virgo if you haven’t guessed it. And for some reason i have this old belief that if i’m not producing, or monetizing what i’m doing, i’m wasting time.Well, last night, i had the urge to paint, and i had a new palette that had been sitting there for a year, and i didn’t overthink it, and i just went for it, no plan. No reason. No goal other than this is what i want to do in this moment.Oh the joy i felt. It was like coming home. I didn’t realize how much i’d missed my watercolor blobs and uneven lines and all my little dots dancing along the page. Oh happiness!And i asked myself. Why did i stop this? And it felt pretty ludicrous that I ever did. This made so much more sense than most things i’ve been trying to do. And now i’m inspired. Since moving to Miami i’ve almost been exclusively painting on paper with watercolors, ink and gouache. What many of you don’t know, my entire college years i worked mostly with acrylic, sand, pumice, and gold leaf. This was an homage to that.When @irenatanevarealty asked for two large commisions for her client’s penthouse, I was excited to paint on canvas, and large ones at that. It ended up being an adventure, with a short time line, little space in my tiny studio apt and honestly, the triptich messed with me hard. The large painting was birthed much easier.But at the end, paint is paint. It’s forgiving. It’s changeable. It’s humbling. I’m very happy with what I created. The flower chaos (lavender one) is in my top 5 things i’ve made. It doesn’t translate the details in the photo. And while the triptych gave me hell, i’m satisfied with the abstract ocean situation it has going on. 50 ft long mural in two days! Paramount & Nickelodeon had a community day across the globe for all their employees, and the Miami office had a few projects at Dunbar school in Wynwood. We were in charge of setting up the wall the night before before everyone came in the next day. It was a paint by number situation and everyone did so well! Any time @thesuperama asks me to assist on one of her murals i immediately say yes because: one, i love her, two i’m guaranteed to die laughing, three, her designs are always cute, four, we get to paint with happy colors, five, she will definitely make fun of me and i always like to be humbled, six, she’s a foodie so we always eat well, seven, we catch up and share ideas. Made my favorite person (my nephew) some custom kicks for his 6th birthday. He loves space and rattle off so many fscts i have no idea about. I wanted something special for him and while he may not understand it now (it is shoes and not a toy after all lol), it gives me joy and that’s what’s important 😂.His somment when i gave them: oh these shoes don’t let you go fast. 😂 i love him.
