I believe this was the first piece I made as a grown-up. Around 2016 or 2017, in Senegal.

Tanta, a diola potter, collected the clay from the river, pit-fired it, and used tree resin as a raw glaze. I’m only realizing now how much of an inspiration she is.

Taking a moment to share a few words—and some beautiful analog photos by the talented student, ceramist, and photographer Mike @ mtackeff. This past autumn, I had the joy of teaching at @salemi.ceramics in Salemi. The school, a center for contemporary ceramic art in the heart of Western Sicily, is nestled in an old convent. Surrounded by history, it welcomes students from all over the world, alongside locals who stop by—sometimes just to peek in, sometimes bringing a warm welcome.

It might seem that ceramics is what it’s all about, but really, it’s the human connections that make it truly special. There’s something magical that makes every moment feel more intense. An incredible team is the force that makes it all happen.

I feel deeply grateful and excited to return next June/July to teach intensive beginner and intermediate courses. A presto, taken in Salemi, Chiostro di Sant'agostino by @miriamsegui_c
