As part of our series sharing more about Mirthe van den Berg and her art, we are re-sharing her artwork ‘The Cross Over,’ which was featured in our group exhibition ‘M.E. Kills.’

The artwork is a part of Mirthe’s ongoing conceptual photography series ‘In Between’, which captures her years spent in bed and being fully care-dependent due to severe ME, POTS, and medication toxicity. This piece captures Mirthe’s experience and inner world of feeling like existing in between life and death, and honours those who have passed from this illness.

‘Not many people know how close I felt to letting go. I’m still here. But as I find my way out of the fog, beside me lie the names of those who didn’t make it. Those who also never received the care they so desperately needed, and were left alone. And ultimately, saw no other choice but to leave this earth, often on their own. I’ve made it to the other side of the endless fog, even though I’m still ill, I no longer feel like I’m existing somewhere in between. The memories of that place will forever be a part of me, but I’m grateful that we’ve parted ways.’ — Mirthe van den Berg, 2025
