Having bereavement leave for pregnancy loss is a huge step in the right direction, recognising it as the loss it is, and acknowledging the grief felt by partners.

But we believe it should be paid.

Our CEO, Vicki Robinson, speaks about today’s update on bereavement leave for pre-24 week pregnancy loss, and that we will keep campaigning for the leave to be paid.

Without paid leave, grief comes at a cost - it should never be a choice between taking the time to grieve and heal, and making ends meet.

People experiencing pregnancy loss before 24 weeks will gain new rights to take time off work under major changes confirmed by the Government.

From April 2027, people experiencing pregnancy loss will be entitled to two weeks of unpaid bereavement leave. Importantly, this right will also extend to partners, the other biological parent or intended parents in a surrogacy arrangement whose experiences of loss can too often be overlooked.

Many employers already go further than the statutory minimum, including by offering paid leave and additional support. But access to compassionate workplace support should not be dependent on a goodwill gesture. A statutory entitlement provides an important safety net, ensuring that people affected by pregnancy loss have a legal right to time away from work at one of the most difficult times in their lives.

While the new entitlement does not yet go as far as the two weeks’ paid leave we called for, securing a legal right to bereavement leave is an important milestone. It sends a clear message that pregnancy loss matters, that grief should be recognised, and that no one should have to choose between grieving and going to work.

We want to thank everyone who has campaigned alongside us for Leave for Every Loss, including the brilliant @sarahowenmp and @myleeneklass, and those who bravely shared their experiences of loss to call for change.

We campaigned for paid leave - and we will continue to do so, because without paid leave, grief comes at a cost.

Love, Loss & Grief is a creative workshop for Black women - hosted by the Pioneer study team.

They are looking for Black women with experience of pregnancy loss to discuss and share thoughts on a new pre-24 week post-mortem service, developed by the PIONEER study.

Their workshop will explore grief, memory, love and loss through free-writing techniques and collage activities, with artist and writer Madinah Thompson.

During the group session they will talk about your experiences of pregnancy loss, what support and services you were offered to find out why it happened, and what you would have liked.
