POSTS STORIES REELS

In 2017, I had the honor of co-producing “Women’s March - a democracy about democracy & human rights” with Iliani Matisse and @mosparkle just after the first Tr#mp election. In DC, cinematographer @sampricew captured the story of @gretchengoldman - one of the march participants we filmed with.

@gloriasteinem addressed the crowd in DC that day, and her message included these powerful words about the demonstration:
“We are here and around the world for a deep democracy that says we will not be quiet, we will not be controlled - THIS is the upside of the downside. This is an outpouring of energy and true democracy like I have never seen in my very long life [crowd cheers]. It is wide in age, it is deep in diversity. And remember, the constitution does not begin with ‘I the president, it begins with ‘we, the people.’ [crowd repeats & cheers]” - Gloria Steinem

Rest in power, Gloria. You certainly helped so many people realize their own power.

New BTS post - "Behind the Scenes: Getting Deep, Editing ORACLE."

Co-director & editor @mischahedges reflects on the editing process, after several months of work with writer / co-director @brendanhedges to assemble a rough cut of the upcoming documentary, ORACLE: the Life & Music of Michael Hedges.

" Editing a documentary is a fully immersive process – it becomes a part of your everyday.
With hundreds of hours of footage to review, tens of thousands of decisions to be made, and the fact that it often takes a week or two to cut a single scene together, means I’m looking at the same emotional moments for dozens of hours in a row." - Mischa Hedges

Its been about 20 years since I discovered how running, cycling and exercise is an incredible tool to combat anxiety, and live a happy, balanced life. It started in college, training for the AIDS/LifeCycle every spring, inspired by my aunt Carol. Then joining the cross country team for a short stint my sophomore year. Then reading Born to Run in grad school and relearning how to run after a few years of regular injuiries. Over the years, I’ve fallen off the wagon, gotten back on, leveled up, backed off, gotten tired, gotten energized again to pursue distance and fitness goals. I’ve dabbled in all kinds of outdoor adventures over the years. During my time in Sonoma County, trail running, and the community that comes with it, has become one of my true loves in life.

I’m a couple of months away from turning 40, and this last year has been one of the most satisfying running years of my life. I’m training for a 50-mile trail race in April, putting 30-40 miles a week in, and every time I lace up, I’m smiling.

Heres to finding something you love, and doing more of it while you still can. by @mischahedges

A visit to the coast for a beach walk, a sit by the sea and to gather some mussels for dinner. The ocean always lifts my spirits when I need it. Just going to leave this right here in case it does for you too. by @mischahedges

@trimtabmedia had a wonderful World Premiere of Ellavut Cimirtuq (Our World Is Changing) this weekend at @anchoragefilmfestival. It was a packed theater, with a great response from the audience, and was incredibly gratifying for @sluokkala, @nalikutaar and I to be at the screening with friends and family to celebrate this film’s debut. Thanks to everyone who supported and collaborated on this film, to the festival directors John and Ida for welcoming us to beautiful Anchorage, AK. This will be the first of many festival screenings for our film, and we were so happy to premiere in Alaska. #aiff2023 by @mischahedges

On location for #OracleFilm on a fall afternoon in New England.

These days, I don’t shoot as often as I used to, since I’m lucky enough to know and work with so many talented DPs who are far better than I am with a camera (hi @claremajor, @sashwaburrous @justinlewisontheroad @gary_ottonello @lingmaishoots ). These days I’m more often producing, directing, interviewing, and worrying about the details of a production day, if we’re going into overtime or meeting a client’s needs or going over budget.

But - it’s certainly fun when I have the chance to roll 24 frames per second, especially when the light is nice and the surroundings are gorgeous, and it brings me back to why I got started with all of this.

I started making films (videos) when I was about 10 years old at the summer school ROP program offered by our local elementary school in Mendocino. For a small town, there was a great range of classes in the arts, music and technology (these were the VHS & BetaCam tape-to-tape days!).

In high school, our video production teacher literally wrote the book on Final Cut Pro, one of the first widely adopted non-linear video editing programs, and stewarded a whole generation of media makers (and now @marshallbrownmedia is continuing this work there today). That all led to me building a portfolio and applying to film school so I could make environmental documentaries. The rest is history ;)

As a year of lots of production and editing and changes to my business draws to a close, the past week at @docnycfest has had me re-committing and re-thinking and re-prioritizing my filmmaking in all the right ways.
