I've been working on these cups for a while and really love where they're at. I'm thinking of selling them in small drops and seasonal colourways... we'll see. For now, introducing Akin Cups.

I learned about meoto yunomi when I first got into pottery and Japanese tea cup styles were trendy. Meoto can be translated to "married couple" or "husband and wife" and yunomi are everyday Japanese tea cups that one can cradle in their hands. Meoto yunomi come in pairs that match in design but differ with one being smaller than the other. I'm sure you can guess which one is deemed the wife.

Akin Cups steps back from gender norms and embraces relationships of different forms by focusing on how objects and people relate to each other. Each pair in this collection speak the same language, interact and share space, and can stand individually as much as together.

One of the great joys I've missed during this pandemic has been getting to do food crawls where we try new places and share bites to max out our options and lessen food waste. The past year I've squeezed in a katsu sando tour with @foodpr0n and a sandwich tour with the whole food mob - @boneats @torontoyeee @toronto2niagara.

We found a couple great sandwich spots yesterday but I have to keep re-sharing the aji katsu sando from @imanishisandobar because I have it as often as I can. Something about the filet-o-fish combo with an airy and super crispy fried fatty fish like aji coming out of a container kitchen in a park is all kinds of perfect. The other sandos are really fantastic but this has my heart.

Join me at Elevate & Amplify! A conference centering BIPOC voices and equitable approaches in design and social change.

A couple years ago I was finding my place in a new career path of an industry that spoke of values its actions didn't live up to. People championing lived experience to only extract it for show and end up prioritizing their biases and business needs, or discussing the complexity of systems without acknowledging their complicity and power in maintaining them. Designers are not neutral. Innovation rarely chooses equity. It has been a journey of (un)learning and finding that my BIPOC peers were seeing the same things and fighting the same fights. This conference is a long time coming and I thank @jennzia and @dia_space for being my co-conspirators.

In one afternoon, we are modelling what it looks like to shift who the "experts" are, while also being critical about the work, how to navigate systems not designed for us, and the broken promises and design tensions in achieving system change. The #AFoodMob usually clears out a bakery of their brioche feuilletées on a yearly trip to Montreal. I've been missing this hilarious ritual of negotiating for loaves and the joy of tearing apart the flaky, fluffy, and buttery loaf together.

A few versions have popped up in Toronto and the most satisfying version has been this cube from @lebeaulab. Rich and salty butter flavour, pillowy and layered interior, and a shattering crust. It's an art I have tried to make myself, and like many viennoisserie, this is so much better left to the professionals. No surprise they also have my favourite croissant in the city.

An unintended time capsule. It has been nearly a year since I opened this door and while I have found facsimiles for many other aspects and joys of life, this is the one that hasn't come together. Last year I wanted to spend more time in nature and this year I have felt the importance of creative outlets and making without purpose.

Travel is going to be quite different for a while and I was really grateful that @gottareachkd @aleem.d @foodpr0n and I were able to visit this lakeside retreat. The weather was perfect, the lake filled with perch, the milky way and Jupiter shone, and the dishwasher took on much of the heavy lifting.

Thinking about more local travel and adventures as I plan on staying within the country and being grounded from flights for a while. What plans have you dreamt up or recommend? Ice fishing, maybe?

Glorious oily pepperoni cups, gooey cheese, and chewy blistered crust. Seemingly simple beauty from @makerpizza, made better because I don't have to dust it with my own fennel powder.

Made even better when it showed up so much earlier than expected! Also, for those in the know... it's still a knife and fork affair. Looking forward to biting in again one day.

Handmade udon noodles served zaru style from a @chef_morimoto recipe via @steamykitchen. Turbot, kabocha, mizuna, and snap pea tempura. Radish and garlic scape misozuke.

Making udon noodles at home was so easy and they had such a great chew. They need time to rest, but other than that it's just water and flour. Paired this with some fermentation experiments, and after a couple hours in red miso, radishes were meltingly tender. I won't attempt tempura again, that's a true art. Only the mizuna leaves had a crisp texture, loved those! They were rich and slightly sweet.

When folks ask me where to get a birthday cake, there is only one option in my mind - the Roselle Birthday Cake.

Not readily available unless a staff member has a birthday or for special order, this passion fruit, white chocolate, and colourful sprinkle cake is a lovely balance of tart, rich, and sweet. @roselle_to has made them available regularly during their pop-ups and it's such a treat to have one all to myself!
