“Between my parents’ two worlds I often felt I lived in the cracks.“ -Edward Said, Out of Place

I’m glad to be an adult now and no longer feel like I am culturally homeless. I know now that my home is not a flag or a passport or a national language, my home are the values that are communicated through those things. My loyalty is to substance, not form, and for this unwavering conviction I thank my often hard-to-articulate multinational childhood.

PS. To give background on my choice of music and quote for this post, truth be told, I tend to empathize with Palestinian artists and writers such as Saint Levant and Edward Said respectively because their music and literature are able to so eloquently encapsulate feelings of exile in a way that I searched for all my life.

For this reason and many others, my heart really feels for the Palestinian people because I imagine that they must feel the displacement I felt throughout my life, but a hundred-fold and in dimensions I wouldn’t be able to fathom much less comprehend. At the end of the day, it’s empathy and of that there’s enough to go around for everybody. by @mishellaneously

I certainly appreciated this exhibition more since trying my hand at crafts on @studio.nerina

Definitely enjoyed my quick trip to my hometown of DC and taking part in my favorite past time— roaming around galleries on quiet days ⛅️ taken in Renwick Gallery by @mishellaneously

I love seeing my Facebook memories sometimes because I defs see glimpses of parts of myself that are still true— like I still am trying to make my own jewelry someway somehow 😆

This is a memory from when I worked with metal for the first time. It was so cool and I loved it, but I also realized that it was a little too advanced for me and that to really commit I would need to buy a bunch of tools not to mention have access to chemicals and fire, etc. I didn’t feel so comfortable welding, for example. I enjoyed the experience though! It was during a time when my partner and I still didn’t know anyone in Queretaro and people were still wearing masks from Covid.

What I like about beading is that it’s accessible, I can do it from home, and that actually all the ancient cultures of the world did a form of beading. It’s humble and straightforward and… I like that 🐰 by @mishellaneously

I’ve never considered myself a sporty girl. My childhood was often spent writing, coloring, reading, making treasure maps and going on detective stake outs (I had a notepad with timestamps for every observation I made on my neighbors in the building). The closest I ever came to doing a sport was joining the crew team in high school before promptly quitting when I realized the team did morning runs and went to the gym (daunting concept for my lazy introvertedness at the time). So why pole?

Ever since I saw Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai back when I was growing up in DC, I knew I wanted to do something related to dance, the circus, and performing arts. Unfortunately for my artistic pursuits, my life didn’t allow for the focus, self-esteem, let alone stability necessary to stick to something. Staying in one place geographically long enough to even comprehend what I liked or not was not possible until arriving in Queretaro. Yes, that’s a long gap from age 16ish to today’s 35, but it is what it is.

For me at least, the switch didn’t happen until I gave up lofty ideas of success. I believed that that life didn’t leave room for the bohemian, hippie pursuits of my nomadic, transient heart. Renouncing that life was goaded, like for a lot of people I suspect, largely by the pandemic forcing a lot of us to renegotiate our corporate lives. That lull in quarantine opened the door for me to consider meeting myself again and try new hobbies again without the pressures of high-mobility, an office to go to, people to impress.

Today I am 15 months into an actual art form and sport that I enjoy and show up for. Believe it or not, it’s new to me. Does hearing myself compared to a stripper bother me? No, because I have a healthy respect for adult women who can choose how they wanna work and the empathy necessary to understand how they ended up there if it wasn’t their choice. Women are a large spectrum from strippers to nuns and I love them all even—if we won’t see eye to eye all the time. (Call me whatever you want.)

I enjoy having a dominion over my body and strength that I didn’t have before and if I look hawt and push the envelope a bit while doing it, all the better. by @mishellaneously

Kicked off Tuesday morning with a little pole class at the studio. It’s the only morning I have free this week so I tried out a new studio that’s not my usual one and was very happy with the lesson.

The instructor helped correct a lot of the little mistakes I was making at home (there’s only so much we can do on our own before we need a professional to take a look!) It was time well spent and I went home with notes on my Climb, Jasmine, Superman, Pencil and Inversions.

I’m glad I took advantage of the morning and got out of the house, even if I came home to a power outage and had to move my afternoon lessons around anyway (I’m an online English teacher when I’m not practicing pole fitness). taken in Querétaro City Center by @mishellaneously

“Before she knew it, the others began to join him in his hypnotic hiss. With every moment that passed staring back at him, she felt that she could understand more but not through her ears. ‘Come in, come with us…’, they bid as their words reverberated in her bones. If she’d had the courage to speak, she would have asked where she was, who they were, how she could get out of there, but her fledgling desire to speak betrayed her. In the blink of an eye, she found herself face to face with his reptilian eyes. Her smallness became subsumed by the weight of the things she couldn’t yet know. Then in another flash, he catapulted her to another world.“ by @mishellaneously
