After 93 legendary years, my Gramma Patricia Jurek passed away in Buffalo last week. We were so lucky to have her for so long, my heart is full and broken all at once.

As a kid I think I was in awe of this nearly six-feet tall blonde boisterous force of nature. ✨ Any sense of adventure i have, I owe to my Gramma.

She married my Grandpa Kenny in Hawaii and they never stopped traveling. She drove a butter yellow Cadillac with a car phone (that I christened with car sickness). She could holler like no one else, whether cheering for the Bills or yelling, “Kenny!” from the next room.

Grams was a true matriarch. In the family and community she nurtured, the warmth with which she made anyone and everyone feel welcomed and loved (so long as they liked her Hunky stuffing). She never left her 1950s “starter home” in Riverside, which now holds lifetimes of memories.

She was the cuddly grandma with the comfort food kitchen, and the “Bad Girl” who, when I called her on her 90th birthday, said she’d have to call me back because the party was too loud. She was a true original.

Joy and sadness seem to be a combo deal. This week we celebrated two of my favorite people, Lori and Logan, for their wedding in Paris. Two people who also nurture community and joy and adventure. In the last few years Grams dropped what little filter she had, which made for the most quotable moments. When our Paris book came out, she had a “unique” interpretation of one of my drawings, and a message for Lori. 🙃

So the party goes on. ✨ No doubt her spirit is off partying somewhere with my brother, White Russian in hand, always having fun. Cheers and love to you always and forever, Grams. 🩵💙💜 taken in Buffalo, New York by @miss_maria

Exciting news I can finally share! I recently had the honor to illustrate a new book, “Welcome to the Afterlife: A No-Nonsense Tour for Those in Mourning or the Merely Curious with Denise, Heaven’s Receptionist” by @taryndelaniesmith , coming out in October and now available for pre-order. 🎉

If you aren’t familiar with Taryn, or Denise, you’re in for a treat. Taryn is an actor, writer, creator, and one of the brightest lights on the internet. (Not to mention hilarious.) Her character Denise shares a glimpse of the afterlife with grace, humor, and reassurance for anyone, but especially those dealing with loss.

Including me.

I really can’t express how meaningful it was to work on this book. In August 2024, just before my birthday, I got an email asking if I might be interested in illustrating a book about a “popular TikTok character.” I’m sure I screamed, then cried, then both. I was deep in my feels, as I was about to turn the age Gary was when he died, and Denise was already one of my go-to grief outlets. So to literally have Heaven’s Receptionist knock on my door felt like the ultimate wink from beyond. ✨🌻

And to bring it full circle, today is Gary’s birthday. 💛 He so loved comedy and jokes and silliness and irreverent humor, with heart. When we were kids we would film skits and music videos on a VHS camera the size of a microwave, using rubber tubes as microphones and wrestling figurines to report the news. I think Denise, with her bathrobe and BIC razor headset, would have approved.

Hello 👋 from the 62nd Izlake-Zagorje Art Colony (@kd_skiz) in Slovenia, the oldest continuously running painting colony in Central Europe.

This region is a special place to me, with friends who feel like home. I first visited during a big transition period, again after profound loss, again in joyful times. The green hills around Zasavje are enchanting, while the industrial landscape is reminiscent of where I grew up. So this week I wanted to paint some quiet ordinary moments that hold layers of memory, beauty, loss, possibility. 🌻🍋

Hvala lepa to the SKIZ Council and @milan_razborsek for this opportunity, and all the artists for the fun times and good chats.

(Fittingly, found a sunflower field on my last day … )
