In my mind several of the works in Presence can be kinda summed up as 'a machine for making art'. But also when you think about it, isn't every human effectively a machine for making art? And when the artwork is 'made' by our participation, our engagement with it, our very *Presence* (haha good work, good exhibition title reference, galaxybrain nerd), then I, you, we, it, Eliasson and his studio cohort, are all machines for making art, together. We are the tiny little cogs in the machine (just like the water droplets in the iceberg in Iceland, if you will). This was a giant room with a giant screen with moving abstract shapes on it. And I looked on, unable to find the label text, but CERTAIN there was more to it than met the eye. And there was. You should always alwaysook begind/along the sides of/through the cracks/around the corner at art. Case in point: what was actually making all the mesmerising, slow moving shapes dance across the big ol screen was a little ballet troupe of lights and prisms and tiny dangling shapes behind the scenes. A month post visit seems like a totally normal and reasonable time to post some art that rearranged your brain and soul and eyeballs, right? Right. This is Olafur Eliasson's Presence at GOMA. Silly me story - I knew about Eliasson but had never seen any of his work in person and yet somehow I knew it'd delight and destroy me. But also, because he has a big permanent installation at a gallery in Arhus, I had it in my head that he was Danish? Ah, nope, he's Icelandic. What that made click for me, is, he is to art as Sigur Ros is to music. Which if you're a Sigur Ros fan, you likely understand immediately. If you're not, the tldr (haha in the least tldr caption possible) is, makes you feel simultaneously tiny, atom sized, and also like you're at one with the universe. Like your feelings are flooding into and out of your body all at once? So yeah, imagine art that makes you feel like that. The first room was Eliasson's photographic work of Iceland plus some installations. Truly I can't do the photos justice in words. Imagine staring at a series tracking a melting block of ice or a series of the sun moving across the face of a snowy landscape and thinking about the passing of time, and the environment and just the quality of coldness (on a muggy Meanjin afternoon) and you're a fraction of the way there πŸ”πŸ₯Ή by @miss_meels
