Today, on National CROWN Day, the celebration of the 2019 national CROWN act prohibiting race based hair discrimination, I’m celebrating more than my curls. Today, I’m celebrating the freedom to wear my crown with confidence.
For so long, our hair has been judged, politicized, and misunderstood. Today is a reminder that our hair is beautiful, professional, powerful, and worthy of being embraced exactly as it grows.
I’m especially grateful to have represented Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. while feeling confident wearing my curls both on and off the stage. Being able to show up authentically has been one of the greatest honors, and I hope every young girl and boy across the Southern Region sees that they never have to change who they are to belong or to lead.
To everyone reading this: wear your crown proudly. Whether it’s coils, curls, locs, braids, twists, or an afro, your hair tells a story that deserves to be celebrated and not hidden.

This past weekend, representing the Association of North Carolina Alphamen, I was blessed to be crowned Miss Old Gold and Black for the Southern Region, representing all southern 7 states of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

I’m not too sure where to begin. This journey started my freshman year and I would have never imagined making it this far. Thank you so so much to my God for walking with me, my village, my sister queens, the entire MOGB NC team and its sponsors, my mentors, and my friends - my gratitude for you all is immeasurable. It is only because of you all that I am.

Introducing Contestant 5 representing North Carolina. Through Ava’s various platforms in research, her community, on campus and with the partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, she plans to promote health equity for Black Americans within her community and beyond.
