Today was my last day at America's Test Kitchen.

Reviewing kitchenwares is nobody's idea of essential work, especially now. No job is perfect. I stayed in mine because it afforded me a rare, selfish luxury: I got to learn something new every day.

By the end of my eleven years with the company, I was getting paid primarily for my skills as an editor and strategist. But it's the work I did as a journalist that I'll remember best. (Creation is more difficult than critique, I think most editors will agree.) Hanging out with three Boston-area butchers for a story on meat cleavers. Learning over the course of a few months how to operate a robotic knife-wielding arm (named Shankbot by a fan) in order to explore whether different types of cutting boards dull knives faster than others. Convincing the Lexington Fire Department to test turkey fryers with me during the pandemic. Spending hours on the phone with some unusually fervent caviar and roe producers, aquaculture specialists, restauranteurs, and fish-and-wildlife folks for a story on American caviar. Collaborating with the USDA Forest Products Laboratory to determine whether lump charcoal or briquettes burn hotter or longer. And talking to countless toxicologists, metallurgists, lab technicians, cookware industry insiders, and consumer product safety lawyers while reporting on carbon-steel cookware contamination issues.

No matter how absurd it is--what a sign of privilege!--to have spent more than a decade diligently thinking about the best spatulas and blenders, I'll always be grateful for the people who enriched my life along the way. I'm especially thankful for all my smart, talented, and often very funny colleagues, past and present, who fed me in many ways over the years. I will miss you.

Please enjoy this selection of old pictures testifying to my time at ATK, my reluctance to look directly at the camera, and my lifelong preference for writing in bed. by @missbartleby

I had the great fortune to share most of Inky's improbable life. I trapped her and her sister in a neighbor's yard when they were kittens. Few knew Inky. Her rough and feral start–a leg lost early, an ill-fated first adoption–kept her shy and wary of strangers. She loved Forest and me all the more deeply as a result. She wanted to be near us always. She slept between us every night, and went looking for us whenever we went out of sight, greeted us from the landing when we returned home. Sensitive and respectful, Inky would wait politely to be invited onto the bed or sofa, then stretch out beside or above us, bracing a velvety paw or chin against our legs or shoulders or backs. She liked routine. She’d bleat a reproachful reminder at Forest when it was time for her morning treat. And when dinner ran late, she’d hop over to her spot on the couch in the TV room and wait for us there. Inky made her own gravity. She was always serious, even when she’d contorted her taxed limbs into the silliest positions. Her big eyes contained stillness and calm and knowingness; they absorbed troubles. You could have a reasonable conversation with her; she talked back, she understood. Inky had a soul. The loss of a three-legged cat may seem very small in light of today's turmoil, but it is our loss all the same. Oh, Inky. Your sixteen years were an epoch and not nearly enough. taken in Lexington, Kentucky by @missbartleby
