Apparently, even on vacation I find a way to clock in. Unfortunately, the award-winning journalism skills did not immediately transfer to the taps at The Foggy Dew in Dublin.

My first Guinness pour was decidedly non-award-winning. The boss ran a tight ship, and I nearly lost my new job when I walked away before the pint had properly settled. After some on-the-job training, I poured a proper pint and redeemed myself with a mean Guinness and blackcurrant.

I had to resign at the end of the night, but my boss @steoleech agreed we could remain mates. Not bad for a brief Irish career. Sláinte! 🍺🇮🇪

CC: Camera guy @paddycronan, who documented my meteoric rise and abrupt resignation at @foggydewdublin.

I’ve watched this video so many times over the years.

It is one of my favorite rare Dolly Parton performances, her cover of the Barbra Streisand classic “The Way We Were” from her 1976–77 variety show.

Filmed at Cheekwood in Nashville, the footage shows Dolly with Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years, who died in 2025.

Dolly was a genius when it came to interpreting music. She could sing someone else’s song and somehow make you hear it differently.

I hope they are together again. 🤍

I lost my voice after NABJ, so apparently I used all of it Saturday night. 😂

I don’t often give speeches this personal. A lot of this one came together in the back of a club in Atlanta just days before I walked onstage, because apparently inspiration has deadlines, too.

Somewhere along the way, it became less of an acceptance speech and more of a love letter to Washington, journalism, my family, and all the people who helped me get here.

At 21, I walked into WABJ with a dream and no roadmap. I started at the bottom. I heard no. I kept working. I kept showing up.

And Saturday night, my peers named me the 2026 NABJ Journalist of the Year. ❤️

There are moments that make you stop long enough to look back at the road behind you. This was one of mine.

I took the long way. It still got me here.

Here are my full remarks.

The work continues. ❤️

For years, I joked that I was a non-award-winning journalist, so I guess it’s finally time to update the LinkedIn. See you in Atlanta, @nabjofficial! by @missbeae

On Sesame Street, Jesse Jackson led children in the affirmation, “I am somebody,” words millions of students learned in classrooms over the decades.

His death comes during Black History Month, underscoring how his civil rights legacy reached beyond marches and campaigns and into everyday life. #blackhistorymonth #jessejackson by @missbeae

Some people love you so steadily, you do not realize how much they have held up until you look back. She was that for my family and she has gone on to be with the Lord. 🤍

Long before I was here, she was already showing up, and from the day I was born, she was there. She carried my family through hard seasons, and when life got heavy for me, she carried me, too. That kind of love is rare, steady, and never loud about itself.

The name I had for her kept evolving, because she kept showing up in all the ways I needed. Over the years she was Mama, Granny, Grandma, Ma, my girl, and so much more. Whatever the season needed, she became it.

She was small in size, but big in presence, the kind of person who could fill a room without trying. Her voice was unforgettable, and if you ever heard her sing, you know exactly what I mean. Even her speaking voice had that clear Southern drawl. Think Dolly Parton, with a little more bass.

So many of my memories are tied to the home she built with my grandfather, her high school sweetheart, holidays, birthdays, and the everyday moments that end up meaning the most. He is still here with us, and the stories he tells about their younger years have been keeping me.

She lived a life of service, at work, in her community, and in church. In her retired years, she volunteered for years as an election poll worker, helping people vote, because she believed it mattered.

Her last moments were filled with laughter with the people who loved her most, and I am holding that close.

I miss her deeply, and I am grateful for a lifetime of her. 🤍 by @missbeae

Imani.

Some people enter your life early and quietly teach you what unconditional love actually looks like.

I knew I couldn’t travel with my full eye makeup kit for this wedding. Anyone who remembers my full glam era knows why. I knew I would cry. I just did not know I would cry the entire time. I cried while writing this too.

Watching Jasmine find her way to Illyana felt inevitable, the way the truest love stories do. When I first met Illyana, Jasmine was giddy in a way I had not seen since we were little girls. I did not need details. I knew. She was the one.

Illyana carries a steadiness that anchors a room. A calm that feels earned. The kind of presence that makes life softer, more intentional, more honest. Loving Jasmine made her part of my life too, and I am better for it.

When I was nine years old, my parents were forced to make an impossible decision during a family emergency. For a season, they entrusted me to another household. Jasmine’s family did not hesitate. They opened their home, took me in, and loved me without condition. No questions. No keeping score. That kind of love changes the shape of your life.

Jasmine and I grew up side by side. Apple picking. School days. Father daughter dances. Ordinary rituals that quietly become the blueprint for who you are. We met by chance as kids, but somehow, we always found our way back to each other. We grew up, but we never grew apart.

Even now, in the middle of breaking news chaos and adult life, I still find my way back to their table. This past Thanksgiving included, last seat available, no explanation required.

On the final day of Kwanzaa, I honor Imani. Not cautiously. Not abstractly. Fully.

Faith in love.
Faith in kindness.
Faith in the people who step up when it matters.
Faith in staying faithful to one another, to a lifetime, and to yourself.

Jasmine. Illyana. I love you.

Day 5. Nia.

Over the years, I’ve had the rare gift of watching this love story grow, not all at once and not loudly, but with patience, intention, and care. What has always stayed with me is how deeply Elizabeth has honored her roots, not only on her wedding day, but in the way she has lived her life and moved through her time in Washington with clarity and grace.

There is a quiet integrity in knowing where you come from, in reckoning honestly with history, and in choosing to carry it forward with loving care rather than spectacle. I’ve watched her do that in her work, in her friendships, and in the way she has shown up for community, and it shaped the way this love took form.

Anthony met her in that fullness, not as a chapter that erased what came before, but as a partner. More deliberate. Less about performance and more about choosing each other again and again.

Their wedding felt like an extension of that life, rooted, joyful, and intentional, surrounded by people who had witnessed the long arc and not just the highlight reel. It was about presence. About honoring where you come from while stepping into something new together.

And of course, Sadie 🐾🐶💅, always part of the story, reminding us that family takes many forms and love lives in the everyday as much as it does in the ceremonial.

Watching this life and this love take shape has been one of the quiet gifts of my adult life, a reminder that creativity is not only art or beauty, sometimes it is the way people build a life with intention, honesty, and care for what came before them.

With love for @lizzkatherine and @ant_grizz 🤍
