A 96-year-old man from Wuxi has gone viral in China after a stranger filmed him at a breakfast spot in Lhasa, Tibet — the final stop of his decades-long quest to visit every province in the country.

The man, known online as Grandpa Tan, was born in Malaysia and returned to China at 19. He is a Shanghai Jiao Tong University alumnus now settled in Wuxi. Every travel agency he approached turned him down because of his age, so he booked a ticket himself: 43 hours on the Z164 train, covering over 3,000 kilometers across the country, entirely alone. Tibet was the last unchecked box on his personal map; he had just returned from a solo trip to Urumqi in Xinjiang before heading straight out again.

Since arriving, he has toured the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, ridden public buses around Lhasa by himself, and told people he feels no altitude sickness. The video poster said she asked permission before filming and was left speechless by his calm determination.

Chinese netizens have nicknamed him the "modern Xu Xiake," a reference to a legendary Ming dynasty travel writer famous for decades of rugged solo journeys. The online reaction is split between awe at his physical condition and reminders that a 96-year-old traveling alone to high altitude is a personal exception, not a template.

He did not wait for permission to take the trip he wanted. He just bought the ticket.
