The Whole City School of Art & Living
San Francisco
Cultural literacy for all!
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Education existed before institutions, and it will outlive them.

In the wake of recent academic closures, the Missing Link Open School, A whole city school of art and living, opens in the fall.

We inherit a distinctly Californian tradition of experimental education: Bauhaus ideas carried west and reshaped through the craft schools, studios, communes, and self-organized communities of Northern California. At Pond Farm and beyond, art, craft, inquiry, and everyday life could exist without strict institutional boundaries. We carry that lineage forward: an open school whose knowledge lives in people, practices, and relationships rather than a fixed institution.

Missing Link Open School treats downtown San Francisco as an autonomous, decentralized school. Mobilizing displaced faculty, alumni, and artists across site-specific cultural spaces, for unmediated study in art, design, and technology. Our mission is to deepen cultural literacy, bridge siloed communities, and safeguard transformative learning as an egalitarian public commons. by @missinglinkclub

Triad of Aerodynamic Simulation |

Where does aerospace engineering meet fine art?

Our upcoming talk with acclaimed artist and designer Peter Gutkin and art historian Ted Barrow at Modernism Gallery delves into Apollo-era NASA Ames design, providing an exclusive look into its functional design and structural aesthetics.

During the 1960s preparations for the lunar missions, engineers at NASA Ames Research Center pioneered the field of aerothermodynamics and the blunt-body concept. Because early spacecraft had to survive extreme friction during atmospheric reentry, their structural aesthetics were strictly dictated by functional physics. Ames utilized extensive wind tunnel and ballistic range testing to prove that blunt, geometric shapes were the most effective way to deflect heat and maintain aerodynamic stability.

Gutkin, whose work is held in the NASA Ames Research Center collection, utilizes these minimal, highly specific spaceflight geometries in his practice.

Join us this fall as we examine how the strict engineering requirements of early space exploration inform sculptural geometry. by @missinglinkclub

@brianrashidglobal Love Letters to San Francisco tells the stories of the people who keep The City’s spirit alive.

Thank you for coming to our recent event at the @cwclub

From the @sfexaminer

“In the modern media marketplace, outrage is cheap to create and profitable to distribute. The playbook is simple: Put out fear, bad news or the latest threat, and shout it from the rooftop.

San Francisco has been a punching bag for a lot of this style of “news,” but there are many creators, artists, and storytellers who are taking a different approach to rewrite the narrative.

I was reminded of that recently at an event at Commonwealth Club World Affairs of California.

Adam Swig, founder of Value Culture, brought together a panel called San Francisco: Lost, Found or Reimagined in July at the public-affairs forum. The room itself felt like a living cross-section of the city — sixth-generation San Franciscans, whose family trees predate the cable cars, alongside younger creators using TikTok and other modern tools to document neighborhood culture.

What united them was not age or medium, but a commitment to telling stories about San Francisco that are rooted in possibility rather than exploitation.

@nelliekingsolomon , an artist whose family roots in San Francisco stretch back six generations to the Gold Rush, offered a metaphor that reframed how I think about The City.
She called San Francisco a “rhizome” — a root system that grows horizontally beneath the soil. Even when the surface appears dry, dormant, or stripped bare, the roots are still quietly spreading, connecting, and gathering strength underground until new life suddenly breaks through.

That image stayed with me, because the younger storytellers in the room who began making videos about local “dumpling grandmas” and neighborhood shops while picking up trash on Baker Beach are not ignoring reality. They are simply refusing to flatten The City into its worst headlines. They’re using modern tools to highlight older institutions, smaller stories and overlooked people, proving that storytelling can be an act of stewardship.”

Missing Link Club: San Francisco’s Missing Conversation | Supported by a generous Culture Forward grant from the Svane Family Foundation.

Developed in collaboration with the team behind SFAQ and Ever Gold [Projects], the magazine’s editorial content extends into live programming.

Missing Link Club (MLC) introduces free experimental programming in Downtown San Francisco from June through September. The series includes workshops, talks, screenings, exhibitions, and parties, alongside the launch of Culture Slop, a new print publication integrated directly into the program.

MLC is grounded in a simple observation: cultural literacy develops through shared lived experience. Missing Link Club establishes a shared third space for collective understanding across disciplines. It brings artists, technologists, and cultural practitioners into alignment through direct engagement, fostering dialogue and trust. by @missinglinkclub
