i didn’t grow up with birthday parties, family nearby, or the kind of celebration that marks your life as worth pausing for. i never had a quince, and for years i told myself it didn’t matter. but turning 30 made me realize how much i wanted to feel seen by others and by myself.

this experience was deeply healing — for my inner child who grew up in a home that couldn’t afford a quinceañera and for the version of me now who still struggles with feeling beautiful in a world that wasn’t built with me in mind.

thank you to the incredible @thaisehahnportraits for creating a space where i could feel safe, free, and proud. and thank you to @casadelvestidocolorado for this absolute showstopper of a dress. & of course, a million thank yous to my *very* cute assistant @rhiandarap. i’ll hold this memory close for the rest of my life.

as i stand in my graduation cap and regalia, i can’t help but reflect on the profound contradictions of this place i’ve come to call home.

just a stone’s throw away, a cliff overlooks our campus, a historical gathering place for the KKK. the weight of this history presses upon me, a stark contrast to the joy of this day.

yet, here I am — an afro-indigenous, first-generation american & student, claiming space where people who looked like me could not until the mid 1980s.

this degree is more than an academic achievement; it’s a declaration that we will not be defined by our darkest times, but by the brilliance we bring forth from them.

to all the third-culture kids who dare to dream, to all the women that adjusted my crown along the way, to my people back home in cuba that are facing more struggles with each passing day: this achievement is yours as much as it is mine. i hope to make you proud.

the last two years have unfolded into the most radiant chapters of my life, each moment with you a verse in our ongoing poem. in your presence, love feels effortless, like coming home to a heart that whispers, ‘you belong here.’ the journey to you, strewn with heartbreaks, now reads like a map—each wrong turn steering me closer to your embrace. our beginning, in the heat of a crowded nightclub, our hands finding each other’s as if they always knew the way, marks the moment my universe realigned. with you, peace isn’t just felt; it’s lived, a testament to finding the one who sees me, truly sees me, as if we’re the only two souls in existence. you celebrate me in my entirety, embracing every shade of my being with a love so radical, it feels revolutionary. on this day, my life pivoted into a story so beautiful, i sometimes wonder how i ever became this fortunate. here’s to us, to the years that have shaped our journey, and to the many more that will witness our love’s unfurling. thank you for making april 9th the best day of the year
