Reflections on turning 25: A week has passed since I participated in my silver anniversary as a graduate of North Carolina A&T. It was great to see so many classmates- share old stories, make new friends, and learn about the personal and professional accomplishments of my classmates.

We think we chose A&T but I suggest A&T chose us. We started on a journey in fall 1997 from different parts of the state, country, and world not knowing what to expect. We brought those black diverse backgrounds together and formed community. Our time at A&T prepared us for the professional and personal ups and downs of life. We remain grateful to the faculty, staff, and alumni that poured into us.

As I sat through the ceremony-watched the processional; heard cheers, chants, and saw tears from graduates’ family members across a packed coliseum; and spoke to other HBCU graduates there in support - it was a reminder of the power of our community.

I also could not help but reflect on the current political climate and the daily assault on blackness and in particular black women. During the ceremony two songs were sung “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and “Dear A&T” our alma mater. The lyrics of these songs have always meant something to me, in this moment they resonated with particularity.

Both set of lyrics were written around the same time 1905 and 1907 and tell the story of hope and resilience. I use to think the “power” referred to in “Dear A&T” was about the state and federal government but the “power” is the black folks that fought for A&T to exist. The meaning of “Lift Every Voice Sing” goes without saying.
I am thankful for A&T and the lifelong bonds it has provided but in this moment I am reminded that people fought for us to exist and we still must continue that fight.

Watching the new graduates recalled memories of excitement, hope, and uncertainty but also reminder of how quickly time can pass. I will see them in 25 years. Connecting with the golden class showed me that Aggies will always thrive.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.

10, 8, 5, and 4 were the ages my siblings and I were when my mom made the choice to pause her professional dreams to focus on us. She held her heart promise and saw us through. My mom’s hope was never deferred, she just channeled it to us. A week ago I watched her dream come true. It was a reminder to never stop, keep pushing, and reinvention is never off the table. It was one of the most satisfying moments in my life to witness her getting hooded for her doctoral work. by @missingpage
