I took a moment to cry just now - but I’m OK and smiled through the tears at the end. Losing my father was a different kind of hurt knowing I was losing a 2nd parent too soon. Also, it was a slow loss over years as he declined slowly, becoming less able to do the things he once could. That was hard watching and caretaking for someone who was once so strong, get so down and embarrassed to be so weak.
I do miss being able to call my daddy to ask how to fix the smallest or biggest of things, but it made me an even harder worker than I already was -pushing through and figuring things out on my own. To a fault I can see now, where I do feel I have to take everything on myself but I have to remember I’m not alone. He and my mom are still there guiding and watching , I have family and have been blessed with a tribe that provides that same unconditional, will always show up for me for the smallest or biggest of things, and gladly roll up their sleeves right along with me. I’m so thankful for his presence, his teachings, and his unwavering support. And I’m grateful for this reflection and reminder today .

I’m pretty sure my dad didn’t like attending all my ballet recitals growing up 🤣, but he was always there. So when I started cheerleading in high school that at least brought the sports element into the picture of my dance world lol And boy was he the happiest father ever, bragging to literally everyone in ear’s reach that his daughter was an NFL cheerleader, how he got to visit inside the locker rooms, meet players, and go to just about all the home games. Even many years after, the nursing home staff knew lol. I also love that one of his last plane trips he was able to take was to visit me in San Fran when some alumni met up for the Panthers playing his first favorite team the 49ers. It’s little things like this I love remembering just how happy & proud he was 🤗 by @missklassyk

Happy Mother’s Day & Happy Heavenly Birthday to my beautiful mommy 🤍🕊️

There are some people whose love never leaves you. My mother had a way of always knowing when something wasn’t right — even from miles away while I was in college. Somehow, she always knew exactly what to say, exactly what prayer to send, & exactly how to bring peace back into my spirit.

This prayer has helped carry me through more than she probably ever knew then my freshman year and still to this day . Years later, when we gifted her a journal for Mother’s Day, she wrote that same prayer in it.

One of her saved quotes was: “Since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special attention to those who, by accidents of time or place, or circumstances, are brought into closer connection with you.” And because of that I always try my best to give the love and support and show up for people when I can.

Thank you, Mommy, for your prayers, quotes of wisdom, your gentleness, your strength, and your love that still reaches me every single day. I miss you beyond words, but I thank God for every memory, every handwritten note, every lesson, and every moment I still get to revisit like this.

We’re heading to New York to see August Wilson’s iconic play “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” starring Taraji P. Henson & Cedric The Entertainer and directed by Debbie Allen. The play explores themes of the Great Migration, the lingering trauma of slavery, community, and the search for self-discovery and spiritual healing within the African-American experience.
