Loretta Violante is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and research-based practices.

Her sculpture “Mom Plow” is featured in our inaugural exhibition opening September 17. This is one of three works of hers in the show.

From the backseat window of her childhood car, Loretta Violante remembers passing a giant yellow bird parked outside the highway department. This body of work returns to that memory: retired municipal snowplows, big, bulky metal things that once served a function and now sit parked and memorialized, once moving, now still.

Using repeated gestures like printing, rubbing, soaking and perforating, alongside a serial approach to making, Violante uses process itself to investigate form and material. Holes become passages that let light, shadow and environment pass through the work, optical shifts that collapse foreground and background. She’s guided by questions of what purpose a utilitarian object serves once it becomes fragile, porous, old, and how time and meditation can shift our perception of an object’s identity.

Loretta’s work will be on view at Magic Hour Gallery, 661 W. Lake St, opening September 17 during Chicago Exhibition Week, September 14 to 20.

Free and open to the public. On view through December.

It was a privilege to learn stone Litho these past two months under Tomomi Ono, Caroline Ongpin, and Diego Briceno in the printshop at @aslnyc . What a labor and what a breathtaking translation of hand to print. I wish it could go on. Thank you!!!
