🍂 Conker Counting 🌰✨

Bringing a little bit of autumn into our maths provision! 🍁

Our Conker Counting tray is a simple, hands-on way for children to explore numbers 1–10 while developing those all-important fine motor skills. Using the tweezers, children can pick up the conkers and carefully place the correct amount onto each number. 🌰🔢

This activity supports:

🔥 The Great Fire of London Curiosity Cube 🔍

Our Curiosity Cube has had a historical makeover! ✨
This week, we’re using it to bring our History curriculum to life as we explore The Great Fire of London. 🔥

Filled with carefully chosen objects and clues, the cube encourages our Year 1/2 children to look closely, investigate and ask questions such as Who? What? Where? When? Why? and Which? 💭

From exploring the materials used to build homes in 1666 to thinking about how the fire started, spread and affected London, the children can use the objects to make connections with their classroom learning.

The addition of flour also gives us a brilliant link to Thomas Farriner’s bakery on Pudding Lane, where the Great Fire began in September 1666🥖🔥

A simple provision that supports historical enquiry, vocabulary, communication, observation and critical thinking — while giving our children something exciting to investigate independently❤️

🐸🌿 Waiting for Froggo… 🌿🐸

This week, our sensory provision has hopped straight into our new English curriculum book, Waiting for Froggo 📖✨

We’ve created a pond-inspired sensory tray using blue and green rice, complete with a lily pad and 3D-printed frog tray. 🪷🐸

Sensory provision is a wonderful way to bring a story to life, giving our children opportunities to explore key themes through hands-on play while developing language, communication, fine motor skills and imaginative thinking.

It also provides a calm, regulating space where children can revisit their learning at their own pace — making those all-important links between play and the curriculum. 💚

Sometimes the smallest provision can spark the biggest conversations! ✨

✨ Introducing our Curiosity Cube! 🔍🌱

We’re so excited to introduce our Curiosity Cube to our Year 1/2 classroom as we begin exploring our science topic — seeds! 🌱🌻

Designed to spark wonder, questioning and curiosity, the cube encourages our children to slow down, look closely and think deeply about the world around them. 🔎💭

As we investigate seeds, our Curiosity Cube will help our children ask questions such as Who? What? Where? When? Why? and Which? 🌱❓ They’ll be encouraged to observe different seeds, make predictions, share ideas and investigate how seeds grow and change. 🌿🔬

From wondering What does a seed need to grow? to predicting Which seed might grow the tallest?, our children will become confident little scientists, developing their vocabulary, communication and critical-thinking skills along the way. 🗣️💡🧠

The Curiosity Cube is more than just a classroom resource — it’s helping our children develop a sense of wonder and a love of discovering how the natural world works. ❤️🌍

We can’t wait to see where their curiosity takes us as we plant, observe, question and grow! 🌱✨

A firm favourite in our setting is Numberblocks! This colourful playdough invitation to play was a huge hit, encouraging children to explore numbers through hands-on, creative learning. As they moulded, counted, and matched the Numberblocks characters, they developed early maths skills, fine motor control, and plenty of imagination—all while having lots of fun!

Zones of Regulation 🚦

As we move into September, there will be a strong emphasis on the Zones of Regulation and their importance in supporting emotional wellbeing, self-awareness, and self-regulation. Children will be encouraged to recognise and understand their emotions, identify which zone they are in, and develop practical strategies to help them regulate their feelings and behaviours. This consistent focus will help build emotional resilience, improve communication, and support positive interactions both in the classroom and beyond.

I will be delivering a Zones of Regulation intervention on a regular weekly basis to provide targeted support, reinforce key concepts, and help pupils develop the skills and strategies needed to effectively manage their emotions and behaviours across a range of situations.
