Kids have to play outside and get into nature. 🏞️ It’s discoveries like this that make us love homeschooling and outdoor learning, and one of the reasons we’ve chosen not to buy our kids a tablet, at least for right now. 😂

They might never make observations like this if they were glued to a screen. Today’s homeschool science lesson happened completely by accident! 😂🕷️🕸️

I’ve honestly never seen anything like this in real life, only on National Geographic! 😂

Pretty cool, right? Anyways….. good morning y’all! 👋🏾 TGIM

I was talking with someone who pointed out that you don’t necessarily need perfect pitch to identify a series of chords. With strong relative pitch, you can hear the interval between chords and use that relationship to figure out the next one, even if the chords are chosen randomly.

That got me curious, so I decided to test something with my son.

I played him a C major chord: C–E–G. He identified it almost instantly, as usual.

Then, completely randomly, I played an F♯ fully diminished 7th: F♯–A–C–E♭.

He immediately said “C°.”

At first, it sounded like he had gotten the answer wrong. But then he started listening to the individual relationships inside the chord and realized something really cool:

F♯° = F♯–A–C
A° = A–C–E♭

So the F♯°7 he was hearing really does contain those overlapping diminished structures. And because a fully diminished 7th is symmetrical, those same four pitches can be rearranged/enharmonically respelled to function as different diminished 7th chords.

What I love about moments like this is that his perfect pitch gives him the ability to recognize pitches, but it doesn’t automatically give him the theory behind what he’s hearing.

That’s what we’re working on now, turning an innate ability into a deeper understanding of music. 🎶

Sometimes what sounds like a wrong answer is actually a clue that there’s something much more interesting happening in his ear.

This is fun yall! Thanks for letting me nerd out. 🙌🏿 #perfectpitch #foryou #musictheory by @missmyarose

Season’s over! We came up just short in the championship, but what an incredible experience it was for all of us.

We couldn’t be prouder of Justus. He earned Most Improved Player after batting leadoff or 2nd at bat all season. Watching him grow into his body, his athleticism, and his confidence has been amazing.

What makes us the proudest though, is seeing how he thinks the game, responds to coaching, and continues to learn every time he steps on the field.

So honored to be his Parents. 🥹❤️

This video has now been viewed nearly 50 million times.

Even writing that feels surreal.

What started as a family moment between a father and his son somehow found its way to millions of people around the world. We’ve met incredible people, read messages we’ll never forget, and been reminded that music has a way of bringing strangers together.

If you’re seeing us for the first time, welcome. We’re grateful you’re here, and we’re excited to keep sharing the journey.

Love yall💛#perfectpitch #music #homeschoolfun by @missmyarose
