Injury prevention is a lie. In today’s era of early sport specialization and year round competitive play, most training programs are the equivalent of a bandaid on a bullet hole, focusing on minimal loads in the name of pre-hab or out of fear of soreness šŸ™„

Hilariously - people will skip lifting out of fear of soreness/injury but they will do practice/lessons/clinics 6-7 days a week, not address their abysmal nutrition, and run off of 5 hours of sleep.

Anyway - if you take the time and put in the work to build capacity and manage the other 23.5 hours of the day, an inseason lifting program won’t make you sore.

What it will make you is more resistant to injury (research shows up to 66%).

So find a strength coach who knows how to manage training inseason, and toughen up and lift.

ā€œIt’s too far away to drive!ā€ (tournaments and practices are never too far to drive)

ā€œIt’s too expensive!ā€ (Signed up for every camp and recruiting service on earth)

ā€œI just want a vertical and agility coach.ā€ (Rather than hire a strength coach I’m gonna pay someone’s Dad $20 to set out some cones and a ladder in the park and yell a lot.)

A few new followers so I’m sampling a new post style so people aren’t confused about a couple of things:

1. That while most of my content is geared towards volleyball coaches and athletes - yes I’m aware it could work for other sports.
2. What services I offer

If strength and conditioning interests you, follow along.

Here’s what a full plyometric session for volleyball players might look for us @fieldhouseohana

1 &2. Lateral and medial hops on the @wolfstrengthcompany wedge
3. Forward hops
4. Depth drop
5. Hurdle approach jumps

āœ…Ankle health
āœ…Athleticism

It’s also really important to note we place an emphasis on LIFTING WEIGHTS with our 18U athletes featured here. College ready = strong. Fight me.

Every one of these gets called strength and conditioning in a gym or weight room somewhere this fall.

The reason nonsense like this persists is that athletes will give the appearance of improving as a result, because growth and maturation cover up a lot of bad programming.

That doesn’t mean they’re getting what they could from a plan built around strength, speed, and power with a long-term plan in place.

If you want a system for building s&c programming from middle school through college, it’s in my book. Link in bio.

If I were starting a 12-year-old volleyball player in strength and conditioning tomorrow, here’s what I’d teach first: landing mechanics, crawling, foot contact, and the 5 basic weight room patterns.
Then I’d teach them again. And again. Half of a team of 12-year-olds won’t remember the warm-up after doing it every day for six months. Every day is a brand new day with adolescent athletes. Train accordingly.

Every teaching progression I use for landing, A-series work, plyometrics, and the 5 weight room patterns is in my book, Developmental to Division I: Strength and Conditioning for the Volleyball Athlete. Link in bio.

Scapular stability or rotator cuff strength: where should volleyball players spend their time?

De Toledo et al. (2025) followed 95 professional and masters volleyball players for 8 months. Scapular dyskinesis was associated with 3.5 times the odds of shoulder injury. ER/IR strength imbalance at 90°/90° was associated with 2.6 times the odds. A 2024 systematic review of indoor volleyball players (Fayão et al.) listed rotator cuff strength imbalance as a risk factor for shoulder complaints, and found greater rotator cuff strength and appropriate ER/IR ratios were protective.

Both belong in the program.

Slide 5 has a few options for each. Slide 6 is my favorite shoulder health ā€œhack.ā€

Before anybody gets on here and says this in the comments or shares it to their story saying it… Yes fam, this statement can apply to all sports.

Anywho…the idea of training like a pro or training like an elite level athlete may sound good on paper or on instagram, but high school athletes aren’t pros.

As a starting point, they don’t have the same schedule as a professional volleyball player. That in and of itself will dictate a different training approach.

Also, what works in a group of 12 to 15 athletes in a fully equipped weight room often does not scale to a group of 40 to 50 athletes with a weight room that is suspect at best.

Train the athlete in front of you, not the one you wish you had.

Also, before anyone gets on here and cries… I have worked at both levels and am not saying that one is more challenging than the other. They each have a unique set of constraints.

3. Medium tier hops 1x9 meters each leg
4. Hurdle Leaps 3-4 sets
5. Approach Jumps 8-12 reps on @ovrperformance
6. Sprints (9 meters) 6-10 reps

Should 12 year old volleyball players strength train?

YES

Should people operating from a place of archaic beliefs, exercise their right to remain silent?

ALSO YES

Will they?

Signs point to NO.

The weight room isn’t the most dangerous place and research is overwhelmingly clear that resistance training absolutely reduces injuries.

Also, ā€œstrength trainingā€ doesn’t mean putting kids under heavy loads they aren’t prepared for and running a powerlifting meet. Let’s stop fear mongering.

There was a bit more in this thread that I didn’t include in screenshots - mainly the notion that kids get all the strength they need on the court. Laughed so hard I fell off my dinosaur on that one.

The only bright spot in this portion of his claim is he did walk it slightly back and say that they should do activities outside of volleyball - that part is true.

What a privilege it is to walk beside an athlete through part of their journey. What an even greater one to later get to celebrate it.

TCUs all time leading scorer. 1,975 points in 4 years. All-American. Has a locker room named after her. Now a Hall of Famer.

Very often, high caliber athletes are also high maintenance. That was not the case for @z_kindred_14

She worked her ass off to become the player she became because of the person she always was.

Two things I’ll never forget:

1. The day she turned 18 and ran around saying ā€œI’m grown.ā€ (Not one soul has or will ever forget it)
2. The day I was on the phone dealing with a terrible family circumstance and had to motion to her to start warmup without me. Before I could get the apology halfway out for being late (an unforgivable sin I would never have showed compassion for), Zahna stopped me and told me they all knew I had been through a lot that year. That it was okay. And I cried my eyes out in the middle of a group hug.

And then there were a lot of 3 pointers in between.

It was an honor to sit on your bench last night one more time, and of course it was alongside @thehairstonsyall
