On this special night, January 1, 2023, Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad was one of the guest artistes at the IBD Dende’s New Year Day celebrations, held at IBD hotel, Leme, Abeokuta.

It got to his turn to perform, and Mohbad rendered a few of his popular songs to the wide admiration of the cheering audience. Torrents of loud applauses resonated through the four corners of the venue. The crowd continued the roars until Mohbad returned to his seat.

I stepped out of the party to head home around 3am. I met Ileri in company of his two other friends having a conversation outside the hotel, around the parking lot. I beckoned him over and he obliged pronto. We exchanged pleasantries while I asked for a photo. I saw humility, courtesy and joviality, all ingrained in a young man, working tirelessly to better his own future.

Mohbad jokingly requested for my drink, then, I said to him, “This XO? There is a truck laden with premium brands of cognac at the back, just walk down to boda Dende. Mi o fi Brandy bayan shere, you must have had yours”. We both smiled and parted.

To think that the same “Imole” with whom I had this little fun time is now deceased continues to hurt till date. Since Dimeji, a close friend, passed in October 2015, I hadn’t been hurt at the obituary of anyone as bad as Mohbad’s. For real, I wept a few times. I never knew I would finally post the photo we had on this day to mourn him. Ileri, in as much as we cannot question God over His rulings on the world, we will rather beseech Him to give you the peace you sought and deserved till your demise. May God comfort your relations you grievingly left behind, particularly, Liam, Wunmi and your parents.
