And just like that there’s Billie Jean King, tennis royalty, getting up from lunch. I did my best to keep my cool while attempting to say hello in the least intrusive way. She was everything you’d hope a hero would be: kind, curious, chatty + chill. Her friends did the right thing to keep her moving but she stuck around. I told her about my tennis beginnings in Toronto with my brother, how we were already too old to make a real go of it, that we got our terrible racquets from Consumers Distributing + I sensed a hint of acknowledgement when I mentioned our first teacher, Vlasta Brankovsky (who coached the grand slam champion Hana Mandliková way back in Czechoslovakia). I thanked her for keeping the tennis dream alive but for being so much more in the world to which she replied “I’m not done yet” + then told me to tune into ESPN for “Give Her The Ball” a 30 x 30 premiere that chronicles her extraordinary tennis career + work as an advocate. My dad Sidney Charles Adilman died twenty years ago tomorrow. I don’t recommend the experience. And yet, I learned a ton living through intense loss. Today, I’m off on another wild adventure + just realized that other life-changing moments have happened to me in + around this auspicious/awful date - could it be a coincidence or is he sending me messages? Reminds of the time I was still in a haze, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, making a TV show within a year of his death. I was kneeling by a pond + a dragonfly floated at my eye level for what felt like an hour when it was just two minutes (which is still a long ass time!). Despite not being very woo-woo, I found myself in a staring contest with a dragonfly, suspended in time, convinced it was my father trying to tell me everything would be okay. As always, I wish I could bring him up to date because he’d be so excited to hear what’s up. It stuns me that I was 34 when he died. We all like to think our game is tight at that age but since then I’ve done a lot of growing up. This year his death date feels heavier + I’ve been carrying it around for months. Maybe because 20 is a round number. Dunno. But damn it’ll never not suck that he had to go far too soon. We lovingly threw his ashes in the Atlantic Ocean on the south shore of PE1. Later today, I’ll be on the Pacific + maybe the dragonfly will find me there. XO dad love you forever 💛 #KeepInTouchWithEntertainment by @misternobu

I’m not rocking the tiff party circuit this year but @reelasian’s annual rooftop jam is non-negotiable. It gets bigger each year + it’s always so good to see old pals, local + those I only see in September. Btw RA celebrates its 30th year anniversary in November so keep an eye out!

My mom @tadilman turns 87 today. I asked her if she wanted to go for dinner or hang out + her response was: “I”m so tired of going out to eat + I’m really liking silence right now.” Honest to the core, often hilarious, generous + kind + forever mad that I bring her my moth-eaten clothes to repurpose into works of art. Much love doing whatever you’re doing today without me lol XOXO by @misternobu
