postcard from the 414

“Part of my appreciation for good moments comes from awareness and recognition. But it also comes from a corresponding sadness at their passing. When something that can never quite be reenacted comes to an end — and all moments are that way — I feel a pensiveness within. It gives my life a quality best described as bittersweet. Those moments take on a double richness: because they are here now, and because they will not always be.”

Again, not my typical “photography” post… just some proud pics and videos I found catching up through old memories. The oldest ones go back to late 2019, a blacktop paving business I started before college began, called Blacktop Boys. The rest are from 2021, when I was 18.

So college happened….

Freshman year. Peak COVID. Classes online, sitting in my dorm room, and the experience I’d been promised wasn’t anywhere in sight. COVID tried its very best to take the driver’s seat. But I didn’t let it.

A guest speaker Jack walked into one of my first in-person sales classes talking about an internship where you’d essentially start your own exterior painting franchise. We connected instantly. What followed was months of evenings and weekends traveling between Milwaukee and the Chicago suburbs: training on how to lead a crew, learning everything about exterior painting and power washing, all while selling and planning jobs for the upcoming summer. Still a full time student.

My family and friends thought I was making a mistake. I mean, I was 18, renting trucks, spending money on equipment I wasn’t sure I’d ever recoup. Looking back I get it.

Shoutout to Andrew for the mentorship/insight behind the scenes. And to da crew- Ryan, Kyle, Beacs, and Johnny, none of it happens without you.

That summer tested me in ways I didn’t expect. From door-to-door sales with guns pulled on me, people who saw a teenager and thought easy target. I had homeowners try to stiff me on payment, willing to let it go to court because they thought I wouldn’t push back. I pushed back. I also learned to lean into being young rather than apologize for it, telling future customers that the guys who’ve been doing this for 30 years know how to cut corners. My crew didn’t know any other way than to do it right.

Partnering with Sherwin-Williams, making memories and building something from nothing that summer taught me more than I realized at the time. And it means everything to see where everyone who was part of cwp or the crew has gone… by @mistryfilms

Summer smash 2021 remains unmatched 🎥
aka The Infamous @lilyachty Walk Out

📝 Not my usual photography post, but this is also my spam and some moments are too iconic not to document. I didn’t realize how iconic that walk out nor this summer smash would become, glad I got to experience it as one of my first music festivals.
