A collective practice of (𝟑) 𝑶𝒖𝒓𝒔 𝑮𝒂𝒑

Excited to share what we’ve been building together as (𝟑) 𝑶𝒖𝒓𝒔 𝑮𝒂𝒑, a creative collective initiated by Misty Choi, Soyoung Ro, and Hyomin Kim.

Since March, Soyoung, Hyomin, and I have been meeting weekly to share our individual practices, exchange ideas, and develop our work through ongoing conversations.

This fall, we decided to bring those conversations into physical spaces through two exhibitions, beginning with CuppyBreak: A Cup of My Own and continuing with another exhibition opening next month.

Our first experiment in turning conversations into a shared spatial language.

CuppyBreak: Cup of My Own, the exhibition I have been working on since June as an Artist in Residence at Grand Central Art Center, opened last Saturday.

This exhibition marks both a closing point for my ongoing CuppyBreak Series and a transition into a new body of work. I conceived the installation as a space where these two moments could meet and connect.

The exhibition at Grand Central Art Center will remain on view through next spring. Please come visit if you have a chance! The participatory installation currently on view will continue to evolve throughout the exhibition and will eventually develop into a performance that will be presented next spring.

Another exhibition, which continues the conversation of this show, will open at GOBI in Los Angeles this November.

Join us this Saturday, October 3rd from 7-10pm for the opening of Misty Choi’s (@misty.study) “Cuppy Break: A Cup of My Own”

Misty Choi’s work, CuppyBreak: A Cup of My Own, begins with close attention to ordinary gestures: drinking coffee, holding a cup, eating, resting, and moving through a room. Through repetition, she discovers subtle differences within the familiar and considers how everyday experiences accumulate within the body.

When an object breaks, fails to function, or unsettles the body’s orientation, habitual actions must be reconsidered. Rather than correcting these unstable conditions, Choi remains with them. Spilling, discomfort, imbalance, and vulnerability become opportunities to adapt and relate differently to objects, environments, and one another.
Moving beyond the familiar form and predetermined function of the cup, Choi allows form to emerge through the physical process of making and the behavior of the material. Rather than working toward a fixed idea of completion, she trusts the decisions that arise through repeated testing and adjustment. Across books, sculpture, performance, and installation, failure and disorientation become methods for paying closer attention, discovering unfamiliar forms, and creating new possibilities for connection. The cup becomes not simply an object, but a point of departure for developing forms and ways of relating that are her own.

The exhibition will culminate in a participatory café created in collaboration with Artists Village Café (@dtsacafe). Throughout the exhibition, visitors’ movements and interactions within the space will be documented. These accumulated traces will serve as material for a future performance activation, allowing the work to continue evolving in response to the bodies that move through it taken in CSUF Grand Central Art Center by @misty.study

It looks like a peaceful getaway, but it was actually a sweaty, hardcore, heavy-teamwork road trip to Bombay Beach to fire my pieces for my upcoming shows in October. 🏝️🔥

만들기 까다로운 책이라 다시 찍는 일은 혼자서는 상상도 못했던 <내가 마시는 커피는 매일 다르다>가, 셰입오브타임의 크리스, 베스, 세영의 정성어린 마음 덕분에 다시 출간되었습니다!! 제 작업의 본질인 개념과 관계를 꿰뚫어 봐주시는 분들을 통해 나오게 된 개정판이라 뜻 깊습니다. 특히 표지와 개정판 서문이 정말.. 말로 표현할 수 없는.. …….아무튼 최고입니다 !!! 꼭 직접 눈과 손으로 보아주세요.

현재 책 구매는 4월 2일부터 8일까지 더현대 이벤트 플라자에서 진행중인 디어마이리더 북페어에서 가능합니다. 추후 서울 양재동에 위치한 셰입오브타임과 온라인 스토어에서도 판매됩니다.

Get @reshare_app • @soonman_chris 올해 첫 출판물, 미스티 작가님의 <내가 마시는 커피는 매일 다르다>셰입오브타임 에디션이 오늘 나왔습니다. 내용은 거의 바뀌지 않은 표지개정판이지만 미스티님이 직접 출판하던 것을 셰입오브타임에서 출판하는 매우 의미있는 출판활동입니다. (많은 분들이 소장중이던/팔 수 없는/저희 몇권 남지 않은/ 소장본을 사고 싶어하셨더랬어요.)

서문을 쓰기 위해 꼼꼼히 미스티님의 글들을 다시 들추는 시간들은 더없이 좋았습니다. 그리고 미스티, 베스, 세영과 함께 이 새 버전의 책이 세상에 나올 수 있도록 전에 없게 촘촘히 준비한 시간들은 더더더 좋았습니다.

타인으로 객지에서 생활하는 젊은 예술가가 겪을 수 밖에 없었던 혼재의 문화적 경험과 언어적 경험이 영문과 한글을 뒤엉키게 하는 편집의 묘미가 있는 아트북입니다. 서문에서도 썼지만 이빨과 혀에까지 꼭꼭 씹히는 형이하학의 언어들이 추상과 개념을 담아내는 묘함이 이 책의 본질입니다. 그리고 커피를 둘러싸고 벌어지는 하루하루와 사람사람들의 따뜻함도 조용히 느껴지는 그런.. 책이에요.

내일(4/2)부터 일주일간 더현대 지하 팝업 공간에서 작은 북페어가 있어요. 그곳에서 첫 선을 보일 예정입니다. 오셔서 구경하셔요.
