Sometimes you’re so focused on the work that you don’t realize who’s watching.

About a week ago my publicist, Misty Starks, told me I needed to stop by Houston Texans Training Camp because some company wanted to meet with me about a potential sponsorship. So naturally, I showed up ready to talk business.

Turns out, Misty had left out one pretty important detail. 😂

I was surprised and humbled to learn that I had been selected to receive the Houston Texans BOLD Award, recognizing leadership and service in the Greater Houston community.

What made the moment even more meaningful is that the recognition comes with a $5,000 contribution to the charity of my choice — and, of course, I selected Texas Black Expo.

For more than two decades, so much of my life has been dedicated to creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, developing young people, building pathways to economic prosperity, and trying to leave Houston a little better than I found it.

When you do this work long enough, there are plenty of long days, late nights, setbacks and moments when nobody is applauding. You learn that the mission has to be bigger than the recognition.

But I’ll admit: it feels good when the work is recognized.

Not simply because my name is on a football, but because an organization like the Houston Texans looked at the body of work and said, “We see what you’re doing for Houston.”

That means something to me.

Thank you to the Houston Texans for this honor and for investing in people who are working to strengthen our community. And a special thank-you to Misty Starks — not only for orchestrating the surprise, but for continuing to make sure the stories behind the work get told.

And to everyone who has worked alongside me, supported Texas Black Expo, attended an event, sponsored a program, mentored a young person, encouraged an entrepreneur or simply believed in the vision — this recognition belongs to you, too.

The award is appreciated.
The $5,000 will be put to work.
And the mission continues.

Where business, culture, influence, and opportunity all meet in one room.

The energy at the CEO Reception was unmatched — executives, entrepreneurs, elected officials, and industry leaders building real relationships, exchanging ideas, and creating new opportunities for collaboration and growth.

This wasn’t just networking… this was access. 🔥

From meaningful conversations to strategic connections, the room was filled with visionaries focused on moving business and communities forward. The atmosphere was elegant, intentional, and full of momentum heading into Texas Expo weekend.

The future belongs to those in the room building it together.
