The readings will be here on the MIT campus in Building 2, room 105.

What connects ancient Greek rhetoric, television, psychology, and the way we understand the world around us?

Categories, says CMS/W professor Edward Schiappa.

In a new conversation, Schiappa discusses "Neosophistic Perspectives," a collection spanning more than two decades of his work, and reflects on the questions that have connected his research across rhetoric, media studies, philosophy, and more.

The fall events calendar continues to come together! Just added is a lunch with A.J. Bauer, an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Alabama. He asks, "Instead of endlessly debating the ideological and normative slants of various media, what if we saw bias for what it is—an acknowledgment of ideological disagreement, and an invitation into a distinct practice of worldbuilding?"

Be sure to register. Events link in bio.

Also slated are a talk on student self-perceptions on their AI use and the fall's first William Corbett Poetry Series reading. Track it all at cmsw.mit.edu/events. by @mit_cmsw

Students may be familiar with generative AI, but that does not mean they trust it or think it writes better than they do.

On September 22, John Gallagher will share findings from a survey of 342 undergraduates across the humanities, business, and STEM.

How are students using AI? How much do they trust it? And how do they think its writing compares with their own?

The findings reveal some striking divides and raise larger questions about how generative AI may be changing the way we write, think, and persist through difficult work.

> Tuesday, September 22
> 5–6:30 p.m.
> MIT

Registration is now open at cmsw.mit.edu.

Organized by CMS/W lecturer Michael Trice, this event is part of a series on AI and writing hosted by MIT Writing, Rhetoric, and Professional Communication. The series is supported by the MIT Human Insight Collaborative (MITHIC) in the MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.

The Irish Examiner on Professor Thomas Levenson's latest book, "A Pox on Fools":

"Unlike the witterings of RFK Jr, A Pox on Fools is necessarily full of science, but informs without ever becoming dull, and is a lively, logical, well-written, and impeccably researched book." by @mit_cmsw

Chris Couch, S.M. '15, and associate director of our graduate program in science writing yesterday won the MIT Staff Award for Distinction in Service! The award "is given annually to a staff member at MIT whose service to the Institute results in positive lasting impact on MIT's community."

Said one nominator, "I am grateful every day I get to witness Chris’s impact on our students and alumni, the MIT community, and the field of science journalism more broadly. At a dark time for facts, Chris is a light. Her passion for this work, its capacity to do good and effect change, and her belief in the role our students play in its landscape, makes it easier to get up in the morning and keep doing what we’re doing."

And said another, "Year after year, students cite Chris as the most exceptional teacher and the heart of our program. Her ability to mentor, support, and challenge students has left an enduring mark on GPSW. Each year since joining the program, she has taken on greater responsibilities, expanding her leadership in ways that have fundamentally strengthened our community." by @mit_cmsw
