Spending the afternoon with @magianote at Robson Square was pure magic ✨. They performed a 2-hour set from afternoon sun until the city lights came on, bringing so much energy the whole time! MITANOHA: “The world is my oyster!”This is the final piece in the Mitanoha mega-commission. Each resource is ready for Mitanoha to rebrand, and my time doing character designs and concept art has come to an end. The final part of the work (and the piece that destroyed my Photoshop’s scratch disks) is this key visual for Mitanoha’s new design! Easily one of the most complex pieces I’ve ever made, I’ve combined almost every skill I’ve studied over the past few years including 3D modelling to create this.Upon completion of the work, I felt a wave of relief and accomplishment wash over me. It’s strange - I had lived for so long working on Mitanoha’s artwork, it was a little strange to be not working on it. It’s common amongst creatives - the whiplash from not having a large project can be strong. On the other hand, I suppose there is another big project waiting for me on the horizon: Tomorrow, I’m moving to Japan for five months for study. It’s not really an art project, but it kind of is. I think that life itself is a sort of art project, subject to multiple iterations and rigorous formal critique. It’s Mitanoha’s birthday!!!! Yay yay!!Here’s the final of the character pieces I made from the character sheet that @mitanoha and I assembled. I think it turned out pretty good! The colour grading was a challenge, it was difficult to not go too overboard but still maintain the intensity that I am known for. I’ve been working very hard with @mitanoha to create a new design for her Vtuber! I am very excited and privileged to be able to share the character sheet we made with you guys! If you look at the original design, the central idea behind it was “tired schoolgirl” - we tried to incorporate elements of that design, with the new central idea being “tired schoolgirl has graduated and become more comfortable in her own skin” - there were lots of elements that Mitanoha had comments on, but we both agreed we wanted a design that drew from Lolita and Jirai Kei elements (Very contemporary!). In the end, a classy blue coat over an dress inspired by Japanese idol girls won out. Mitanoha’s style of streaming is comfy but a little unhinged, so I thought the combination of these two motifs would be versatile enough for any situation. I also know that Mitanoha streams bilingually, so even though my Japanese isn’t great, I tried translating the character sheet as well. This has been the first time I’ve designed something of this scale, and it was a fun process through and through. Throughout the process, I kept referencing character sheets created by artists for the Vtuber company Hololive. Vtuber character sheets seem a little different from animation or game character sheets, and I think that’s a sign that the medium is really coming into its own.
