My new short film ‘Safeword’ out now.

“An escalating war of kept nudes, secret recordings and mutually assured destruction spirals when two ex-lovers meet for closure and control of the narrative.”

In May 2024 I started letting a male character and a female character talk to each other in my notes app. They were recent exes, didn’t trust each other, but had to somehow reconcile moving on with the intimate and indestructible ties of modern technology/social media.

I expanded them into a script, found two fantastic and powerful actors, built a set, and we shot in 3 days + pickups in Oct/Nov 2024. Then I lost the spark for the project for 6 months - put it away then came back to and finished the edit around mid-2025. Submitted it into festivals and over the last year it achieved a level of success I would describe as ‘medium rare’. It was to be free of its final festival embargo on April 1st this year.

So this March I thought I might do a final pass on the edit before publicly sharing. I got sucked in, spent days on it, cut 2 minutes from a 17 minute film without removing a single line of dialogue. Maybe my year ago self was just a sloppier editor or maybe I found the spark that I lost. Either way I was reminded of how important it is to find the stamina to finish a thing - to a level where you think it couldn’t reasonably be better. Not always, burnout is real. BUT, when you try, my experience is that you learn so much more about your own work and your own self than you ever otherwise could.

Having this final version of the film makes me almost want to do the festival circuit again. But it’s time to put a passion project out into the world again and move on to what’s next. I’ve got a coming-of-age puzzle-box, a Greek myth and an action movie, all mostly shot and most nearly edited. So out the door with ‘Safeword’ and on and on and on.

I ended up being very very happy with this film. Jacob Taylor and Heidi Lynn play Jake and Maddie brilliantly. Alfie Martin and Matthew D. Gilpin were an amazing 2-man crew. Izzy Haines was a life saver. Deep love and gratitude to you all.

The antidote to a year of destruction is a year of creation. This year of creation started as a film-a-month challenge. After finishing six films in the first six months, I’m in the midst of developing many more - each one requiring more than a month’s worth of work. Compared to last year, I am now in a constant state of creation. Mission failed successfully.

‘JARGON’ - June’s effort in my 2024 film-a-month-challenge.

Watch in link in bio…!

This month I returned to Paris to work with Marion as we missed each other last month. Spent three days there, the first night was writing, the last two days were shooting. It was a curious and new experience directing actors in a film you’ve written but in a language you don’t speak. Also, I’d long had some experimental ideas of working in specific ways with language and subtitles in a film, which in part means that there are some portions of this piece where I, even now, don’t know what the characters are saying.

Six down, six to go.

Having gone full tilt making a 17 minute piece last month, I wanted to take it easy for my May film, so went abroad to stay with Freddie for a few days - half shoot/half holiday. The plan was to make a piece that was tiny and easy and under a minute, saving myself for the months to come.

We spent the first day walking around with some vague, safe ideas that I’d brought with me from home, trying to shoot bits and pieces. The weather was shit. We were tired. We went back to Freddie’s. Spent the next day uninspired and questioning whether or not to even make anything. Then, on my penultimate day, a new idea presented itself. We stayed up and followed that idea into the night.

This film is experimental and dark and not for the faint of heart. I recommend not watching it.

For my April film: I’d approached the actors in Feb, written the script in the last week of March, and scrambled to try and shoot and cut the thing before the end of April. I’d written a 21 page script, which is a bit mental for a monthly film project. Failed at getting it done by the end of April but succeeded at making something possibly rather interesting.

“Clouds” - a 17 minute two-hander, siblings dealing with a familial explosion. Played fantastically by Edward Annells and Lois Baglin.

When it was time to make my March film, I found myself in New York participating in an intensive @impulsecompanyinternational acting course. So I chose to use the talents of two of the actors there, as well as the cool as fuck setting. I’d brought with me a small Sony point and shoot and we shot ‘Solstice’ in one day and one night with no other gear and no script, on location in NYC.

For my February film I planned to shoot a dark script written by Izzy a couple years ago. The shoot failed for many spectacular reasons including and not limited to the weather. So instead, that night, Ellie helped me create an unplanned, improvised scene (based around the planned shoot’s script) in the car instead. The resulting film is a loose, rough around the edges experiment - attempting truth within improvisation.
