Book Review Timeline- The Tail of the SnakeBy: @mitchell.mcclymans Synopsis A young lad by the name of Michael finds himself getting caught up in one of the worst crime organisations in the world. He begins meeting the love of his life in the early parts of the book where he ultimately begins the start of this treacherous road he is about to go down. His family, friends, neighbours and the police do everything in their power to save Michael and his family. But will they be able to withstand what is about to come.My thoughts Timeline is a gripping thriller, family drama and love story all rolled into one. We first meet main protagonist Michael at a bar trying to chat up the barmaid and picking fights. He then starts reminiscing about his happy childhood and we learn how he moves from innocent kid to into organised crime. I enjoyed getting to know Michael and his family, meeting his first crush Heather and friend Greg. I enjoyed the way McClymans explored the different relationships dynamics. From a carefree close knit family who he’s moved to a family under duress to first crush and boys getting into trouble. An encounter then leads them into the world of gangs and human trafficking. Mitchell hooks you in immediately and keeps up a cracking pace throughout the novel and builds up tension to a big finish which whilst it leaves you satisfied you know there’s more story to come. An emotional, nostalgic and gritty read- I could see it making a great TV show or movie. Thanks to the author for an ecopy of the book. Timeline by Mitchell McClymansOkay, that was wild! I finished Timeline in 2 days and am still reeling a bit. First of all, Mitchell McClymans tells this story with the energy of a Labrador on the beach. It is clear from the very first page how excited he is about this story and that passion carries through the book.Timeline follows the life of Michael who we first meet in a bar finishing a fight started by some drunk and unruly Scotts. We are then transported back to Michael’s childhood where we stay for the remainder of the book. And poor Michael. This lad really goes through it! We are dragged with him through his earliest experiences of heartbreak, failed and ridiculously embarrassing ventures into a life of crime (Greg, put that marker pen down!) as well as a terrifying encounter with the dark, dangerous world of human trafficking. Oh…and he has a few really weird dreams too! The narrative is driven by the dialogue between characters and I would say that it reads more like a script than a novel but that actually works well. The characters are all real and likeable - including the side characters. As the story follows a group of ten year olds for a lot of it, there is a lot of humour injected into the narrative through their funny and awkward escapades (Greg… I’m looking at you again bud!). That being said, the plot also explores family dynamics and how bloody hard making the right decision as a parent can be. All in all, this was a funny, dark and wild ride which I thoroughly enjoyed.Thank you so much @mitchell.mcclymans for the copy of this book - it was such a fun read!❓How well behaved were you as a kid? BOOK REVIEW 📚TITLE- TIMELINE: THE TAIL OF THE SNAKE AUTHOR- MITCHELL MCCLYMANS RATING - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 ⚫️Timeline: The Tail of the Snake caught me off guard, but in the best way. I went in thinking I’d get a standard crime novel, and ended up with something way more layered and emotional. Right from the start, you get pulled into Michael’s world, and the writing just buzzes with this raw, honest energy it feels real, not dressed up. The dialogue, too, sounds like something you’d actually overhear, not the kind of stilted lines you see in a lot of novels.⚫️What really worked for me was how the author moves between intense, heart-pounding scenes and these quieter, emotional moments. One page you’re laughing or feeling nostalgic, and the next you’re hit with something actually heartbreaking. The childhood flashbacks, messy family dynamics, and all of Michael’s inner struggles just made everyone feel so real, and I got attached quick. It’s not a book that begs you to feel; the emotion just sneaks up on you.⚫️And the setting Australian, gritty, but kind of beautiful at the same time makes the book stand out. It’s so different from most crime fiction I’ve read lately. The whole thing feels vivid, emotional, and almost cinematic. Finishing the book, I honestly wanted to stick around with these characters longer because they stayed with me. Coffee in hand reflecting on the journey.Glad to see so many of you coming back in for the 2nd so soon. My debut has not only taken up my street (the neighbours are bang onto it 😂). But it’s gone international with buyers and “Arc’s” going to multiple places in the UK, USA and India!!!!From how and where I wrote these books, seeing them go international blows my mind!!!!A target audience I would like to reach is New Zealand and to see Chinese and Japanese readers get amongst these books. As I have characters from those regions throughout the series. Along with some Māori characters in the 1st book that I’m really proud of.None the less, the journey is back on track, smile on my face again and hey; the sun is shining and the coffee is warm.
