The Q&A identity at first glance is serious, data-driven and tech-focused, however look closer.

Pseudo data, trends and nonsense metrics map out our future as a tongue in cheek comment on the often corporate or performative business aspects of working in design, and our attempts to capture something intangible and emotional with something concrete.

The tone; academic, data-driven and ominous is in humorous contrast to the reality of the event, which will be an open, human conversation among friends, peers and you.

BARD Type is a custom typeface designed by @mitchellfgillies and @warriorsstudio for the new @bard.scot identity.

“Our aim was to capture a lot of the intangible ideas, processes and feelings which reflect who and what BARD are and translate that into the typeface.” Mitchell F Gillies

The typeface is inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, medieval lettering, architectural drawings and pushing creativity within limitations, reflective of how BARD approach each project within the practice.

The graphic, linear-constructed display face is built around a grid with an expansive set of alternative characters and ligatures which can be selected while composing words, sentences or paragraphs.

The grid represents the practical restraints within BARD’s projects.

The expansive character sets obscure letter forms, unexpected ligatures and infinite combinations represent BARD’s pushing of creative possibilities within the constraints of each project.

“It was important to have a base set of characters which was clear and functional but also to draw lettering which was more sculptural, poetic, obscure and artistic - to reflect BARD’s poetic vision.” James Gilchrist, Warriors

Within the characters, structural details were created in the form of ink traps, inspired by the craft of traditional printing. Where the strokes of the letters meet, the ink traps sit like architectural gussets.

This physically and craft also extends to the nature of the letterforms, many of which were drawn by hand:

“Drawing letters by hand on gridded paper together allowed us to move towards more unexpected sculptural forms and meant that the type design process was collaborative as characters in the typeface were designed by everybody across the BARD and Warriors team.” Mitchell F Gillies

Another feature is a unique rethinking of accents, which create cutaways within the letters to accommodate the accents within the grid, created specifically for Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) to respect the Hebridean roots of the practice.

A custom typeface pulling from Mackintosh, medieval lettering and BARD’s own architectural process.

Nearly every character has a suite of alternates and many fun ligatures and extras to weave the themes of storytelling, making and poetry throughout.

A generative, mutable identity built inside of Touch Designer that could be broken open and hacked up by the students and faculty, pulling in sound, data and essentially any other content TD allows. by @mitchellfgillies

Inner sleeve for UNREAL by @moni_jitchell

Reflected the two-piece nature of the band with an invertible design across the inner and the labels.

Custom ambigram word mark and Fugue Head by Radim Pesko used throughout, for a balance of weird Soviet technicality and psychedelia. by @mitchellfgillies
