What resources are available for reimagining design education today? Pedagogies for Anti-Disciplinary Design Education (Routledge, 2026) mobilizes teaching experiments by authors from twelve global institutions who seek to transcend disciplinary boundaries in design education. This talk – part of an international series of discussions emerging from the book – will focus on Dixit’s earlier work in studios across different institutions, to the making of the book and lastly, his PhD work which embodies the idea of anti-disciplinary thinking in architecture.

Becoming Undisciplined

The editors of Pedagogies for Anti-Disciplinary Design Education (Routledge, 2026) announce Becoming Undisciplined, an international series of public conversations marking the book’s publication. Edited by Mitesh Dixit, Fedah Taqi, and James Westcott, the volume brings together teaching experiments from contributors across twelve universities in ten countries.

At a moment when design education is caught between institutional inertia, market pressures, and planetary crises, the series asks how pedagogy might confront the entanglements in which design operates. Moving beyond disciplinary divisions, these discussions will explore practical, ethical, and context-specific alternatives for design education.

The talks begins at Pratt Institute and the School of Visual Arts in New York City in October, then moves to Politecnico di Milano, the University of Montenegro, UCL Bartlett School of Architecture in London, and ETSAM Madrid. In 2027, the tour continues at CEPT University in Ahmedabad and at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Each event will bring editors and contributors together with faculty, students, practitioners, and the public through presentations, invited responses, and panel discussions.

Viva Voce — Architectural Cartography
Mitesh Dixit’s PhD Defense Presentation

PhD Title
Architectural Cartography: Methods for Counter-Mapping the Transscalar Landscapes of Copper Mining in Krivelj, Serbia

Date and Time
Thursday, 07 May 2026, 14:30

Location
Politecnico di Torino
Castello del Valentino, Sala della Caccia
Torino

Mitesh Dixit will present his doctoral dissertation, Architectural Cartography, which examines the village of Krivelj in Eastern Serbia as a site where global demands for copper, critical raw materials policy, foreign investment, spatial planning, and everyday life converge. The research asks how copper is “done” in Krivelj: not only through extraction but also through legal instruments, supply chains, environmental impacts, household displacement, and personal narratives. The dissertation develops Architectural Cartography as a transscalar and transdisciplinary research methodology that combines geomatics, fieldwork, critical cartography, data science, drawing, and image-making. Rather than treating representation as an illustration of research, the project positions architectural drawing and cartographic image-making as central research methods for linking global processes to local consequences.

It was an amazing end to an amazing semester - thank you to a group of students who bought into the process and did the work - I could not be more proud. And, of course, this would not have been possible without the never-ending support and leadership of friend, comrade, and Chair of UG Architecture Stephen Slaughter @stephenslaughters - I am looking forward to what lies ahead.

🌿Have you watched our 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀? Featuring exchanges over the last year between artists, curators, cultural producers, thinkers and historians whose work is situated at the intersection of art and justice, and who push the boundaries of their respective disciplines, informing our work and thinking.

𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘅𝗶𝘁 (@miteshdixit), 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 (@maxwellmutanda) spoke with DH’s 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗮, 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂, 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗣𝗳𝗲𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 in a wide-ranging conversation on architecture, nation states, digital spaces, representation and image, the slowness of drawing and observation, and the speed of cartography and of social media.

𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘅𝗶𝘁 is an architect, political geographer, author, educator and the founder of DOMAIN Office, an architecture and urbanism studio based in Belgrade, Serbia and New York City. DOMAIN deliberately works without a manifesto or agenda but insists on a method that explores the very nature of a question.

𝗠𝗮𝘅𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 is a pluridisciplinary researcher and visual artist whose data visualisation and architectural practice investigates the role of globalisation, climate and technology within the built environment. He was 2018 AFRICA’SOUT! Artist-in-Residence at DH and is 2020 MSc in Sustainable Urban Development Sheehan Scholar at the University of Oxford.
