What remains - 2026
I returned to Schlatenkees again this year, seven years after I first shot it.
The lower glacier tongue I had been following was gone. A large glacial lake now occupies much of the basin that was still covered by ice in 2019.
Higher up, fragments of the glacier remain, crevassed and increasingly separated from the landscape I remember from that first visit.
Seven years is a very short time for a landscape.
At least we have the photographs to remember it by.

The complete Schlatenkees 2019–2026 project is now on my web (click bio ⬆️ ) or www.mitjakobal.com .

Schlatenkees, 2019–2026.
First Encounter 2019

I reached the glacier for the first time with my good friend, photographer and adventurer @mateja.kordic
We arrived in darkness and low cloud, without really knowing what the landscape around us looked like. I made a long exposure, and the photograph revealed the glacier before we could properly see it ourselves.
We stayed up there through the night. The clouds opened, the stars came out, and by morning we finally saw the place in full light.
I had no idea then that I would keep returning for the next seven years.

The complete project is now on my website (in bio), or www.mitjakobal.com.

Schlatenkees, 2019–2026.
...I first photographed Schlatenkees in 2019. I returned in 2022, twice in 2024, and again in 2026.

With every visit, the landscape had changed. The glacier tongue retreated, exposed rock replaced ice, and the lake kept growing. By 2026, the lower tongue I had first shot seven years earlier was gone.

Seven years... a very short time for a landscape.

The complete project is now on my website - link in bio.

Parts of the long-term documentation were produced in collaboration with @greenpeaceaustria
