TYPEWRITER ART: “Everything solid melts with the air"’ is a visual poem of fading identity and the roots which it's birthed from. Each piece is held by metal in between tracing paper which reads:

" Everything solid melts with the air, identity fades under sunbeams into dried up soil
Dust, pollen, mold, settles on the surface
Of what is blanketed by earth
Ah! That porous solidity
Like an island in the glazed look of the dying
Even the roots of lemon trees
Melt and hide beneath the surface."

Mitoshka knows that best, busy working to make creative work happen for other artists rather than herself. This August, she decided to be a hermit and make something for herself, and what a joy that was!

Some photos from the Generations of Memory Exhibition I curated in October ❤️

In preparing for this exhibition, each artist was encouraged to step beyond repetition and mastery, to experiment with her medium as a language for memory. Clay becomes a metaphor for memory. Threads of embroidery entwine with ancestral teaching. In each gesture, the artists affirm that handicraft is not only a skill, but a vessel of history - one that carries both personal and collective memory.

This project is also a conversation across generations. It honors the voices of mothers, daughters, and grandmothers, and recognizes the role of craft as a bridge between them. Through storytelling, song, and shared making, the exhibition becomes more than a display of objects: it is a gathering of lives, memories, and traditions that continue to shape the identity of AlUla today.

By celebrating these women’s creative journeys, we also celebrate the enduring vitality of AlUla’s cultural heritage - not as something to be preserved, but as something to be lived, reinterpreted, and passed on.

This butterfly is my first artist study on the machine- in a week where Chat GPT updated to generate images, it feels great to spend a few hours typing symbol by symbol inspired by what was the “new art from” 100+ years ago.

Inspired by Flora F.F. Stacey who, in 1898 made an “art-typing” of a butterfly! She was an Englishwoman who had done some remarkable work at machine drawing!
