what it’s actually like to make art for a living

i’ve been homeless for a year now.
well, not that kind of homeless.

i’m theo, and i’m blessed to be living the dream I had of travelling the world, while getting paid to make art that I love.

so, i don’t really have one place to call home, i kind of end up making everywhere i visit home.

this is exactly what I wrote down that I would do when I dropped out of University and started my creative business, now known as Falcon & Flower, in 2019.

i’ve gotta say, the vagabonding artist life isn’t as easy as people think it is… and yet it’s also not as hard as people think it is.

on one hand, there is NO safety on this path. you think living paycheque to paycheque is hard? try living invoice to invoice. i’ve been broke. maxed out credit cards, bills to pay, no idea how I’d afford to eat. it’s HARD.

it takes massive courage and self-belief to leap into an independent path—no guarantees, no safety nets, no predictable outcomes.

but on the other hand, it often feels so natural—like i’m doing exactly what i’m meant to do, exactly when i’m supposed to. the perfect opportunities somehow fall into my lap, moments of connection and fun flow with ease almost every day. it’s enriching, exciting, and the growth i’ve experienced along the way is unique and profound.

and i can’t see myself doing anything else with my life. i love it.

mirrors reflect our physicality;
art reflects our spirituality.

the creative act gives the sub-conscious influence of our perspective, taste, experience, passions, values, dreams, desires, fears the opportunity to be witnessed through the decisions we make in the process.

in simpler terms, art helps us see our SOULS.

art can be shadow work,
art can be inner child work,
art can be meditation,
art can be prayer,
art can be service,
art can be nothing but a wild mess.

but in all of it, art is reflection of who we are, on a much deeper level than our external appearance.

art is a mirror…
and a powerful one, indeed.

Creativity Heals ♡︎
It is the ultimate shadow work, inner child work, and reflection of life itself, wrapped into a seemingly mundane act.

It forces us to confront our self-judgement and move beyond it, freeing us from the invisible chains that we cage ourselves within.

The act of art-making (in all forms) allows us to witness our fears, desires, passions, inspirations, shame, and everything in between with a level of detached awareness and openness.

And along the way, we learn to surrender to the process, finding love for its ups and downs, and recognize that life itself is an act of creation, our ever-evolving piece of art.

With childlike wonder and playfulness, we return to a state that we embodied prior to the layers of conditioning we’ve accumulated in our process of maturing.

And once we share our work, whether it be to ourselves or to a larger audience, we have the opportunity to have an aspect of ourselves be witnessed.

This process is not only incredibly healing to the creator, but also to the viewer.

important > urgent

the fastest way to lose our sense of purpose in life is to allow ourselves to get lost in the sea of tasks and to-do’s.

the actions that will lead to the greatest sense of alignment with purpose will often not feel urgent.

the act of
sitting down to meditate,
picking up the instrument,
booking that trip,
connecting with that friend,
writing that book,
prototyping that business,
getting out into nature,
calling your parents,
going to the gym,
following your heart

all of these things rarely feel urgent, unless we are in a mode of crisis…

but they’re all important…

and when we lose touch of our heart’s call in the noise of all the urgent tasks at hand, we get farther and farther away from inner and outer alignment.

what important action are you avoiding that would be a massive step in the direction of your personal legend?

i encourage you to take that next step today.

prioritize what’s most important, not what’s most urgent.
