It was a perfect day, to me. We started with brunch at @ceintuurtheater in Amsterdam - a former 1920s cinema now reimagined as a cafe. The bones of the old structure are still intact, with its arched ceilings, coloured glass walls, and just enough wear to remind you that it really was a part of the past. Next, we walked a couple of kms to the @rijksmuseum, where we spent most of our afternoon. This is where Rembrandt’s original The Night Watch lives. It’s one of those works you’ve seen in reproductions all your life, but seeing the real thing takes time. You have to keep looking. What stayed with me even more was how it’s being preserved. Operation Night Watch, a multi-year research and conservation project, is tracking the painting’s condition using X-rays, high-resolution imaging, and pigment analysis. From tiny cracks to shifts in colour, it’s all being studied in incredible detail. Usually, this kind of work happens behind closed doors, but here, it’s a part of what they share with you. After wandering through Museumplein, we crossed the street and hopped onto a boat to cruise through the canals of the old town and onto the Amstel River. The houses along the way - slightly slanted, leaning toward the water - looked like they were mid-conversation. A little off-kilter, charming nonetheless. Back on land, we strolled and stopped at a few design stores - something I almost always do when I travel. My recommendations? @dilleenkamille for its super-cute, timeless essentials, @annaninanl for statement objects, @thefrozenfountain for its multi-brand curation, and @ateliersukha for how certain it is of its point of view. Each one felt different, but all tapped into that same instinct of mine: to look, to find, to bring a little of a place back. One side, the sea—vast, open, endlessly breathing. The other, a riot of bougainvilleas—soft, wild, in bloom. The air is light. The day is kind. The sun is about to set.
