Dear Steve and Shirley,
My husband takes his mother to dinner one Sunday a month, and I let them have their special time together. His niece recently moved in with his mother, and she tagged along on their most recent dinner date.
My husband told his niece that it was a one-time thing and that she wasn’t going with them ever again. His niece called him afterward and went off on him about the way he spoke to her, so he hung up in her face.
Last Sunday, I went to dinner with my mother-in-law and my husband to celebrate her birthday. The niece wasn’t invited.
On our way home, the niece called my mother-in-law. The phone was on speaker, but the niece didn’t know it. She was very upset that I went to dinner and she wasn’t invited. She said my husband better watch his back because she has some dirt on him.
That’s when my mother-in-law told her she was on speakerphone and tried to end the call. But the niece said she wasn’t going to cover for my husband the next time he hooked up with this other woman. She said he’s a piece of sugar honey iced tea and that the truth will come out soon.
My mother-in-law turned bright red. My husband took her phone and hung it up as I started asking questions from the back seat.
I asked my mother-in-law if she knew about my husband cheating, and she ignored me. My husband said his niece is crazy and a compulsive liar.
I haven’t spoken to him in days.
I would love to talk to his niece to find out who the other woman is, but I don’t know if I should believe her or not.
