Lightship 95 Studio Appreciation Post!

2024 has started with taking the time for upgrades, a studio is never finished. We’ve been installing a new personal monitoring system @lightship95 and working on some other exciting new developments (watch this space on those), and one of the things I love about studio upgrades is the headspace to reflect.

We’re always considering ways we can make the space inside the ship more creative, but it’s only when we take a short break from music to make those upgrades that I get the chance to think how far we’ve come. I’ve been recording and mixing music for 20 years and I’m proud to say that productions coming out of this studio in the past year are the finest I’ve ever worked on.

A huge part of that comes from @vennpro. Since partnering up as studio managers we’ve had a shared vision from day one, both motivated by making this ship the most inspiring and creative space it can possibly be. Come make music with us on the big red ship! taken in Lightship 95 Recording Studio by @mixedbymoebius

Due to a last minute cancellation we have some unexpected availability next week! So get in touch for discounted rates. It’s normally really hard to book a week at short notice, so let us know what you need and we’ll do our best! taken in Lightship 95 Recording Studio by @mixedbymoebius

As a studio owner (@lightship95 with @vennpro ) gear purchases are complicated by a few factors beyond those that musicians consider. Does it have a name I can put on my website that will catch people’s eye? Is it intuitive enough to lend itself to use in a session? Will it need repairing every week?

Those questions have pushed me towards a Juno 60 for years, but the repair costs and uncertainty have always made it hard to decide for sure. The @dreadbox.synthesizers Artemis has come along and shown me everything I wanted in a polysynth, without the worry of aging capacitors and the for factor of another massive keyboard taking up space in the control room.

It sounds massive and the built-in effects are spectacularly rich. Looking forward to taking many more sessions to the outer galaxies with its sweet pads onboard @lightship95 taken in Lightship 95 Recording Studio by @mixedbymoebius

Through The Fallstreak — out now.

We went into the studio for one improvised session hoping to walk away with a single. Five hours of later, we had more than enough for an album.

Featuring Matt Robinson on piano and Jon Scott on drums, co-produced with Giles Barrett, and brought to life visually by Francis Devine — this one was a genuine surprise from start to finish.

This is a Bandcamp only release. You can find the link in my bio.

I am humbled and delighted to hear “Falling” last night on @_bbcradio3_ Night Tracks with @saramohrpietsch 🌿It’s the recording of a spontaneous improvisation I made on guitar, piano and voice @tyroneguthriecentre. Thank you Sara.

There was no initial plan to release it. Partly because I had thought it was just an improvisational practice piece, and partly because of imposter syndrome for my piano playing and recording ability. I mean I’d never even opened a grand piano before let alone recorded myself playing one 🥴But with the kind encouragement from my mentor @majiker_ I decided to let it go.

🎶Big shout of gratitude to @mixedbymoebius @lightship95 who further mixed & mastered Falling. I Love your work Giles and love working with you.

Further shouts of gratitude to @corkcitycouncil arts office for the grant for the residency where I created Falling 👌🏽💚🎶
