“To me, my tools and equipment are functional forms of art” Thomas Carvolth

Through passion and obsession, I have curated a deeply personal and wonderfully unique collection of machinery and tools. Each carries its own history of use, place and connection to community. While collectively reflecting the locale in which I work.

These objects are more than functional instruments; they form an archive of my practice. Their wear, construction and continued presence speak to a relationship with making that is grounded in material investigation, craft and the archaeology of process. Together, they embody the values and ideology that underpin my work: to preserve, adapt and find new meaning in the tools and materials that shape how things are made.

At the core of my approach is an interest in permanence, utility, and cultural endurance. Creating objects and outcomes that hold relevance beyond immediacy, while maintaining a strong connection to craft, process, and the physical act of making.

We are very excited to present works by an amazing group of artists who together explore ideas about big changes in the world and how they manifest on community and individual levels.

NOM NOM by Thomas Carvolth @tcarves reworks a singular industrial form into a sculptural candle holder.

Forged steel, powder coat and machined brass establish a balance of weight and precision, while candlelight introduces a subtle temporal shift. Through its asymmetrical composition, the familiar industrial form is reoriented, creating a quiet sense of movement, rhythm and balance.

We are proud to partner with the City of Charles Sturt @charlessturtsa to launch the Emerging Curator Residency at @mixedgoodsstudios, a pilot program supporting the next generation of curatorial talent!

This six-month residency provides emerging curators with guidance, professional development and the opportunity to develop and deliver a curatorial project for SALA Festival. 🖼️

Delivered in collaboration with the artist-run Mixed Goods Studios, the residency strengthens industry connections while supporting emerging voices and vibrant cultural communities.

Congratulations to emerging curators Brooke Ferguson @brookie_fergie and Renee Pastore @reneepastoreart who will undertake the residency.

Rigg Design Prize 2025, @ngvmelbourne

A moment to reflect on Mixedgoods co-founder @andrewcarvolth presenting new work for the Rigg Design Prize at the National Gallery of Victoria. The project brought together process, material, industrial and Australian vernacular design references.

Produced at Mixed Goods Studios alongside Thomas Carvolth @tcarves this work carries a shared language developed over years of making, testing and refining. A beautiful moment of two brothers working within the same studio community, contributing to a wider culture of collaboration and exchange that defines Mixed Goods.

Through the middle of this year, Mixed Goods Studios’ co-founder and studio tenant @deantoepfer was fortunate enough to be offered the position of atelier manager at @boisbuchet in France. Over the summer, he spent several months overseeing the atelier throughout their workshop season, supporting the delivery of 22 workshops and a residency program alongside an inspiring lineup of designers and participants from across the globe.

The experience was intense, rewarding, and deeply enriching, pushing Dean’s skills in every direction. Boisbuchet’s commitment to experimentation, design, and connection resonated strongly with his own practice and values at Mixed Goods Studios.
