When asked about her introduction to music, Maren shared how it became a vital presence in her first few months of life, serving as the only remedy that soothed the colic she endured as an infant. This deep connection to music continued to shape her upbringing in her home and community and eventually led her to Boston, where she now focuses on her solo artistry and songwriting.

@maren.doughty (she/her) is a Boston-based folk singer-songwriter originally from Northern Michigan, where she grew up on the shores of Lake Superior. Her music conveys self discovery through descriptive lyrics of the nature she was brought up around.

My afternoon with Maren was filled with laughter, shared passions, and insightful conversations. In the warmth of her thoughtfully decorated bedroom, adorned with trinkets and hanging art, Maren performed three original songs that mirror the soft and vulnerable nature she exudes.

Despite being naturally sociable and drawn to community, Kai discovered a sense of solace in retreating, using music as a way to embrace solitude and digest his emotions. Over time, this creative process not only provided personal reflection but also connected him to a world of people he might never have encountered otherwise.

The transition from performing covers to original music was a gradual and personal evolution for Kai. His songwriting captures raw, challenging emotions, demanding a level of vulnerability and self-assurance that took time to acquire. His limited musical knowledge was another set back, but by leaning into the lyrical side of songwriting and drawing inspiration from others, Kai was able to overcome his creative barriers.

After moving to Colorado, Kai rekindled his passion for playing music through open mic nights and connecting with local musicians, but everything came to an abrupt halt once the pandemic struck. As life shifted, so did Kai’s priorities, making his return to home and the people he loves most his main focus.

With newfound confidence from performing, Kai returned to Boston where he continued pursuing his musical endeavors. Supported by friends and family, he began recording and releasing his original songs, turning his passion into something tangible.

(3/3) The third and final segment features @carolinestrickland__’s unreleased song “Single Action Army”, alongside an insightful conversation exploring the authentic inner space where an artist’s creativity reaches its purest form.

When drawing inspiration from another artist or trying to emulate a particular sound, Caroline notices the inescapable self identity that continues to shine through. No matter the efforts put in to adhere to a certain genre, the creator’s distinct footprint will always remain.

The topic of selfhood led Caroline to reflect on her time as a child and the deep connection she feels to her early years, claiming I caught her at a good time in life. The apartment she’s in, the job she has, and the music she makes align her with the person she has always been, and will continue to be.

When asked about the final stroke of writing a song, Caroline perfectly describes the conclusive sensation of a song landing in your hands, and an innate knowing of completion. While the technical aspects provide a crucial foundation, songwriting is deeply rooted in an intimate connection with your art and an openness to follow wherever it leads.

At times, this process can be blocked by a lack of inspiration or ideas. When this happens, Caroline turns to books, movies, and music, drawing in other artists’s stories to let out her own.
