The North Atlantic is not the an outlier. It is a region with its own economic future to build.

Communities throughout the North Atlantic have shared realities, our coastal, rural, and island communities share more than geography. We understand the challenges of distance, economic dependence, and decisions being made far from the places they affect.

This week, at the Atlantic Social Impact Exchange Summit, I had the opportunity to facilitate conversations on taking the next steps for regional collaboration, and asking what’s next for our subnational governments and collection of communities.

One thing remains clear to me: We cannot keep talking about regional prosperity without asking who owns the assets, who controls the capital, and who gets to shape the future.

The North Atlantic has the people, knowledge, and resources to build something different. What remains is the political and institutional willingness to invest in that potential.

Our communities should not have to wait for prosperity to reach them. They should have the power to build and own it. taken in Dieppe, New Brunswick by @mizpahc

As the Canadian Federal Government looks to bring more private capital into public infrastructure, including airports, I think there is value in looking at the experience of Caribbean and island jurisdictions.

Sitting at Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport, the question is not whether private capital delivered new infrastructure. Bermuda got a new airport.

The deeper question is: what did the derisking of the infrastructure do when it comes to wealth generating for the community over time?

Who captures the economic value? What does social procurement look like? How much of the spending stays local? What skills, businesses and ownership opportunities are created around the asset?

Infrastructure investment should not only be judged by what gets built. We should also ask what remains in the community once it is built.

Very proud husband moment.

Gabe has been promoted to Master Sailor.

For the last six years, I’ve had the privilege of watching Gabe grow, not only in his career, but as a leader and as a person. I’ve seen the work, discipline, sacrifice, and commitment behind the uniform, including all the things that never make it into the photos.

What makes me especially proud is the positive light he continues to bring to inclusion and belonging within the Canadian Armed Forces. He has always understood that leadership is also about making space for people to show up as themselves, feel respected, and know that they belong.

Watching him continue to grow while staying true to who he is makes this promotion even more special.

Congratulations, MS Nadeau. I’m incredibly proud of you.

Happy Canada Day

I came as an international student. Stayed long enough to realize the country isn’t perfect and neither is the story we tell about it.

But here’s the spicy part: being proud of a country doesn’t mean pretending it has no flaws. It means believing it’s capable of more.

So today, I’m celebrating the Canada that welcomed me, challenged me, and gave me room to build a life that I didn’t think I could have.

And as I keep shaking the burden I feel about being a first generation Canadian, I feel more comfortable pushing.
And I’ll keep pushing for the Canada that’s more affordable, more ambitious, and more honest with itself.

Patriotism isn’t applause. It’s participation.

Happy Canada Day from coast to coast. To coast. 🍁 by @mizpahc

I find myself looking at Bermuda through a different lens since being back, I found myself thinking about wealth.

Not the kind measured by bank accounts. The kind measured by time.

Bermuda has always been a place connected to capital. Ships, trade, insurance, tourism, international business. Wealth has moved through this island for centuries.

Yet the question that interests me is not how wealth is accumulated. It is how wealth is translated. How does it move, what’s the relationship between demand and supply?

How does capital become opportunity?

How does investment become housing, infrastructure, and stronger communities?

Working across Bermuda and rural regions in Atlantic Canada has taught me that many small places face a similar challenge.

The issue is rarely a lack of potential.

The challenge is building the institutions, partnerships, and governance systems that allow capital to serve the people who call these places home.

That is the conversation I keep coming back to, when I see wealth, I am not simply thinking how wealth is created.

But how wealth circulates, endures, and leaves something behind. taken in Hamilton, Bermuda by @mizpahc

In my office I have a quote “The rabbit of coherence is always downstream of the rabbit of control.”

The idea behind it is that people and institutions often chase control first, believing coherence will follow. However, I wanted to flip it, if you create coherence by shared understanding, trust, alignment, and clear purpose, many control problems solve themselves. taken in Hamilton, Bermuda by @mizpahc
