Mizzou Agroforestry researchers are working to identify ideal alley crops for hazelnut systems in the Midwest. Back in early June, we harvested winter wheat from our newly established ā€˜Raritan’ hazelnut alley cropping research plot! This research will give us a better understanding of tree-crop interactions as the hazelnuts mature so farmers can have reliable information on resource competition, management nuances, and system design. Stay tuned!

Our Tree Nut Lab hit the road this past month to visit chestnut orchards participating in the Chestnut Improvement Network (CIN). Doctoral student Aubrey Teckam (@aubreyteckam) and Research Specialist Ian Boyd (@ian_boyd_32v) visited Bob Stehli’s farm (@wintergreenfarm) to collect tissue samples from his chestnut progeny for a gall wasp resistance mapping study. Then, they headed to eastern Kentucky to check on the trees for overall health and early bearing at two CIN Farms. They also spent a day in Maysville, Kentucky at Propagate’s home farm (@propagate_ag) collecting early bearing data on 4,000 five-year-old trees! They counted the number of burrs on each tree to understand the ā€œprecocityā€ of each individual tree (i.e. their ability to produce nuts at a young age) and take data for future selections to develop early-bearing cultivars. Dr. Ron Revord also just returned from a Maysville visit to collect data on early bearing trees, and was happy to see so many promising candidates for continued development.

Back at the MU Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Farm, Aubrey and the team started harvesting hazelnuts! In our hazelnut alley cropping demo, alfalfa was cut and baled. Soon, chestnut harvest will begin, followed by black walnut and pecan.

Aubrey Teckam (@aubreyteckam), a PhD student in the Center for Agroforestry and Graduate Research Assistant with the Revord Lab, walks us through her research examining hazelnuts at the Horticulture Agriculture Research Farm.

Hazelnut is an emerging crop for the Midwest, and Aubrey’s trials are helping to develop cultivars (and accompanying ā€œpollinizerā€ varieties) that are disease resistant, highly productive and produce high-quality nuts to meet the standards of confectionary markets.

Hazelnut is just one of a few high value specialty crops that can boost farm viability while providing conservation value to family farms and landscapes. by @mizzouagroforestry

Mizzou Agroforestry teamed up with the University of Minnesota to conduct a black walnut taste test with 100 participants. Taste testers rated each sample for aroma, flavor, texture and overall liking. Black walnut has a stronger, more distinctive flavor than the more commonly available English walnut, which many consumers describe as milder. Even so, 40 participants preferred at least one black walnut sample over the English walnut. Three advanced breeding selections from Mizzou Agroforestry received the highest ratings because they had less bitterness and a milder aftertaste.

The study found clear differences among black walnut cultivars. Some performed nearly as well as English walnut, while others were rated much lower. These results will help breeders identify the flavor traits consumers prefer while continuing to improve yield, nut quality and orchard performance.

Aubrey Teckam (@aubreyteckam), a PhD student in the Center for Agroforestry and Graduate Research Assistant with the Revord Lab, walks us through elderberry harvests and the elderberry breeding program happening at the Horticulture Agriculture Research Farm. Senior Research Specialist Elizabeth Prenger leads this research at HARF.Ā

She looks into cluster size, ripening date and several other characteristics in the program to develop elderberry cultivars that perform exceptionally well in Missouri and similar environments. Missouri is the #1 producer of elderberry in the U.S.

Elderberry is just one of a few high value crops that can boost farm viability while providing conservation value to family farms and landscapes.
