KOTE Art Festival Recap: (a moment of) Creative Self-Care

I got to host a workshop at @kote.kr for the first time during the KOTE Art Festival☺️ I created it to challenge the participants on their ideas about what can be called 'making art' and to let them pay attention to the current moment through creative expression. The workshop involved a reflection on a piece of writing by Julie Cameron and a mix of creative exercises. The results were a wonderful display of how differently everyone experienced the same present moment and how the process can be more important than the product (tho many of those were still really nice pieces)!

The workshop also served as an appetizer for a larger series I'll be developing at KOTE, so stay tuned for more information. I can't wait to make more people make more art😉 taken in KOTE by @mjaboas

Sharing another @ways_of_being_seoul workshop creation. This time the theme was water, asking us what kind of water we'd like to dive in. After scrolling through my endless pictures of bodies of water, I realized the morning of the workshop that I've had the same picture as my phone's screensaver for the past 7 years (slide 8). It became an easy choice. It was taken at Siesta Key, a breathtaking beach in Florida. My family travelled past there on the roadtrip we took after my graduation. I spent so long drifting in the water looking at the majestic clouds that my parents had gotten worried. It was simply so peaceful... Although Lorde did not release her song 'Oceanic Feeling' until years later, it always reminds me of moments like that one. The second piece is an attempt to capture that feeling.

To further connect to the theme of water, I decided to bring my watercolors. Inherrited from my grandmother (my brother and I refer to this as 'art supply nepotism'), who also taught me the medium as a kid. Though I rarely really know what I'm doing with them, the process of watercolors feels deeply nostalgic. 🖌️

Some of my favorite figures from my recently finished sketchbook.

Most of these are random slices of my life here, but a significant chunk was made during my first @ways_of_being_seoul workshop, where the theme happened to be figure drawing. It was such an intuitive and fun new way to get introduced to new people.
Still, by far my favorite thing about this sketchbook size is that I can grab it at any point and attempt to capture the inherent art of a moment. Regardless of whether I feel the result is effective or not, I always enjoy how it shifts my attention.

Early April I bought myself an A6 sketchbook for the first time, wondering how this size would work for me. 4 months later, and it's completely filled up. I don't think that's ever happened to one of my usual go to A5 sketchbooks before. I'm loving having it on me at all times. I've already bought and started in the next one 😌

Here's a calm flip through of the whole thing, including stamp experiments, random notes, and rough/first drafts for sketches I'd end up giving away.

This page was always meant to be a kind of virtual sketchbook, which means also showing the whacky sketches I might never look at again. That said, I've been hesitant to share my art on social media, not in small part due to the lack of regulation around genAI, but I decided I'd rather have too many people see what flows out of my hands than no one at all...

I hope you enjoy. If I flip past a sketch that isn't featured in one of my other posts let me know and I'll gladly send you a pic:)

I made two complementary pieces for the exhibit "Mom's Table" by @hbcartclub shown @kote.kr.
It's been a long time since I've had an art piece of mine displayed on a wall. It was fun to work towards complete works rather than just endless sketches for once. I especially enjoyed making these piece, because I finally got to verbalize and visualize a feeling I've been walking around with since that apple-pie-baking-session one late night in Valpo. I feel fruit has its own love language.

I mostly want the pieces to speak for themselves. However, I do want to highlight that I've enjoyed getting responses from people after seeing the pieces, telling me about the habits and quirks they've witnessed in themselves that scream 'I AM MY PARENT'S CHILD'.
It's worth reflecting on, I think, regardless of whether it's to our delight or not. I sure can come up with a whole list.

The exhibit got extended until the 26th, so if you haven't had a chance yet and are in Seoul, be sure to check it out!

Lastly, shout out to the endless-amounts-of-fruit-cutting mom, @boasmontfoort kusjes 😘

My first serious attempt at oil pastels: the sunrise I witnessed a week ago over 영금정 in Sokcho😌☀️ Thank you @seoulculturelounge and @yunsonga for the wonderful workshop:)

After the workshop I spent some time at 천계천 to enjoy the weather (just like this funny bird) and ended up sketching two friends chatting and laughing non-stop. It's not a spectacular sketch but I've been enjoying gifting strangers little pieces of art just bc I can☺️

I have not touched this account in years, but I never stopped creating. In fact, I'm continuously creating more and more freely than before. I just didn't feel like posting. I still have doubts about using this app to share stuff, let along my art. But I feel a desire to share what brings me joy and what I spend much of my time doing, so here I am.
I recently joined @uskseoul for the first time, and discovered a whole network of peers doing what I love. Just as I was contemplating a good way to return to posting, I discovered this week was international urban sketching week, giving me the perfect excuse. 🦋🌽American Treasures🌽🦋

This is the biggest piece I've made in a long time and meaningful to me for multiple reasons.

It has its origins all the way back in the first lockdown, when @maaike.kramer gave the assignment for a little still life of knickknacks for a watercolor painting through her soul-saving zoom classes. I gathered a collection from the extensive amount of random ✨stuff✨ I saved from my time in the states, and curated my micro collection.

Me being me, I never finished the sketching stage and let it roam around my room for years, but a few months ago I picked up where I left off now that I'd been fixing my relationship to art making. It's been a rewarding experience to finish it slowly and in little bits, although it made it hard to say 'it's done'.

Watercolor was also the first medium I was taught (by my grandmother). So although I don't know much about it formally, it feels familiar and comforting:) I'm quite happy with it, both for the memories pictured and those tied to the making-of😌
